im looking at getting a new rifle for coyotes, foxes and whatever else comes in the path. ive been looking at the AR's and bolt actions but i havent really found anything to catch my eye. I would also like to keep it as short as possible for lite traveling and carrying. does anyone have good recommendations or idea?

Vision X Tantrum Lights for being a "pimp in the bush", Cobra CB, lots of tools and random junk that helps to add traction due to weight.
My predator slayer...in the foreground is my Rock River .223/556 Lower, with 20" 1:9 ER Shaw Threaded and Fluted Extra Heavy Bull Barrel, Young Manufacturing NM Bolt and Carrier, Magpul PRS, Harris Bipod, Leupold Mark AR Optic, ERGO Tactical Target Grip, Phantom Flash Hider/Muzzle Break. I put most of the parts together from Model 1 Sales. This is a great shooting gun, my only wish is that it was a .308 instead of a .223 and then I could get rid of the rest of my guns(hypothetically -of course..haha).:D

Remington makes an SPS model. i believe its a 20" barrel. they are really nice guns and I like them better than the VTR's

and like others have said, the rock river varmnit models are nice as well.

I love my Mini 14 Ranch rifle, best .223 I've ever owned. The only thing I'd recommend is to get the synthetic instead of the wood.

i have slayed soooo many coyotes with an old beater ruger M77 in 22-250. i gave it up for personal reasons.

x2, a AR platform will serve you better for follow up shots. I am building a dedicated predator hunting AR rifle right now actually.

The Howas kick ass. That being said I put together a Stevens 200 in .22-250, a Rock Mount bipod, and a decent Bushnell scope fro about $650 CDN. The coyotes hate it. I didn't like the grey stock, so I camo'd it up with a little Krylon. Seems to be holding up well. Nice and deadly out to 250 yds and I'm sure it will shoot well further out than that.

I had one and didn't like it. Stick with the M16 or any variation. The mini14 was not very accurate. At 25 yards my patterns were the size of a soda can. The when you disassmble it to clean it you zero is wrecked. I'm not a fan. The M16 is out of the box accurate and reliable.

I have a Thompson Center G2 Contender in the .204 variety. 22" Bull barrel. Yes, it is a single shot weapon. However, given my terrain type, one shot is usually all I get. And you can realistically reload it fairly quickly, IF you are ready for a reload. It is coupled with a bi-pod, and a 6-24X40 MIL-DOT reticle Bushnell. All walnut stocks and grips. I bust caps off of soda bottles at 250 yrds using Hornady 32 GR. V-MAX Factory loads. I really want to try to get into hand loading, but it is WAY too expensive. If you are going the route of repeating rifles, go AR.

Hand loads are the way to go man. I used to hand load all kinds of stuff for my grandpa, anything from .223 up to .300 mag
Once you buy the tools you need the cost is not that bad. I think it's RCB that sells a starter kit with everything you need, minus the bullets, powder, etc...

But if you want constand sub MOA groups then handloads are the best.

I have a 17 HMR that I have had good luck with, but a 223 is probally the best round I also use a shot gun with BB load. All work good for me.
