Frame rust recall

I would just return it,and make a complaint.
It should nt be like that,that is unacceptable .

I went into this expecting there may be issues afterwards and during. This however is just plain sloppy. This Dealership has done a lot of frame replacements, by now,they should have it down pat. All the thinds I found are little and I have already fixed most of them. Now I am wondering if they even did a four wheel alinement as I didnt see anything about it on the paperwork.

 

Just dropped my 2006 Access Cab TRD Off Road off this afternoon for the frame replacement. I've been waiting since March for the frame to come in. The Service Manager told me I should be able to pick it up this Friday. I am happy to be getting the new frame but a little worried by some of the stories I've read.

I stopped in the dealership last week and got a tour of the shop and met the technician who will be doing the work. They promised a call tomorrow with a list of what they will be replacing and suggestions for other parts to replace while the frame is being done.

I know there is a small hole in the muffler and last week the steering was stiff in spots caused by the intermediate steering shaft. I confirmed the steering issue by lubing the universal and the stiff steering went away for a couple of days. I will post progress if anyone is interested.

They did mind February of 2015 and did a very good job.
If you can afford it,have your shocks changed,if not done already,you will save lots of money.
I had mind done about 5 months after they changed my frame,though I should have had it done when they did the work.

Thanks Charly. I dropped off a set of Bilstein 5100 struts and shocks to get installed with the truck. My truck has 157,000 miles, never had any problems with it until the last few weeks. I'm thinking of this as an opportunity to get a like new truck for hopefully only several hundred out of pocket. Was thinking of having them install the TRD stainless steel cat back exhaust while they're at it. Should be getting the price/availability for it in the morning.

That is what they put on my Tac when i changed my shocks,though that time with labor it was a bit over a thousand bucks Canadian that is.My Tac now has 112 kilometers today,and still is running great!
My muffler was changed also when they did the frame,the dealer gave me an incredible deal on one that was brand new ,that guy bought a new truck,and wanted dual exaust instead.

The truck has been very good to me for 160,000 miles but Ouch!!

 

If that was me I would try to tackle some of that stuff myself, or at a minimum have a friend confirm their findings. I always expect Toyota to find some future issue when they do something as basic as an oil change. I normally just nod and say thanks I didn't know that. Confirm it then replace it myself for what I should be paying instead of just paying a crazy amount.

those prices seem steep.

I can get a complete steering rack assembly from wrench monkey here in Canada for $500.

I'm no timing chain cover expert, but the engine is out of the truck, that seems expensive to replace a gasket.

I have been buying my own parts, for things I either know need replacing, or suspect might. A lot cheaper than toyota prices, and dealer said they have no issue with me doing so as long as parts are ready when they are doing my frame swap.

 

So I finally got notified yesterday that my frame was in. Been waiting since Feb. Dropped my truck off about an hour ago and got a loaner - a brand new 2017 Tacoma with only 3 miles! Sweet!

Now I'm back at the dealership. Stopped to pick up some stuff about a block away from the dealership, and when I went to leave the loaner started stuttering really bad, almost felt like it was going to stall. It cleared after 5 or 6 seconds. Decided to take it back and have them check it. Don't want to get stuck with a dead truck. They offered two other loaner vehicles, but said they recommend I just wait - they only have a sienna or a prius. So here I wait. Hopefully it checks out ok!

 

I hear ya Coot. I am going to let them put the rack in and take care of the rest myself. The rack isn't bad as in faulty, it is corroded around the passenger side mount.

 

Review the item costs closely with the service advisor, make sure he took out a lot of the labor because of the disassembly/access. I asked for quotes on several items, disagreed with the labor and told them I didn't want to do them. The Service Manager called me later that day with reduced labor charges. A few I did, a few I didn't. When I had an issue at delivery (a code showed on the scan, they fixed it but it took a few days for the part) and discussed it with the Service Manager, they further cut labor on the items I didn't have them do.

 

Well here goes...

I finally got my frame replaced on my 02' ext cab Tacoma. I was told on June 16th that they would replace it 2 - 3 months. The frame came in Oct. 16th, so 4 months later. I asked them if I could supply front suspension parts and if they would install them since there doing a complete front suspension tear down anyways. They said sure, I supplied front struts, rear shocks, upper control arms, inner tie rods, outer tie rods, upper ball joints, lower ball joints, and sway bar links.

They took everything apart and gave me a rang. They told me all 3 drive belts needs to be replaced, front bushings, positive cable is corroded, muffler, gas tank skid plate, and rubbers on rear leaf springs in case of heavy loads. I took them up on the first three and declined the last three recommendations, way too pricey (they wanted $600, $500, and $500×2). I figured I could do it myself much cheaper.

Picked the truck up today with new frame, front suspension, drive belts..etc. Drove it about 60 miles and so far so good. The funny thing is when I left the dealership the manager had an unreal look on his face, he charged me $390 for extra labor for thr front suspension and the extra parts. He then said you do realize we did $13,000 worth of work?? I smiled and left immediately.

Also, I forgot to mention this in prior posts due to fear of jinxing it. The truck has a prior salvage title on it. If a dealer says they can't swap out the frame due to it being salvaged, I would take it elsewhere. It can be done, my truck is living proof.

 

I just had my frame replaced and the timing cover leak fixed. TSB quotes 10 hrs to do timing cover. The shop rate is $125/hr and parts are about $300 at dealer price. They pulled my engine and knocked off some hrs because it's easier to do it that way. I have photos of the the entire job. Your oil pan, valve covers, lots of bolts and accessories are removed. In other words that price isn't too bad if the vehicle isn't having the frame swap but in your case you might want to negotiate it down some. By the way truck drives better than new now. Service techs are top notched at my dealership.

Toyota to pay up to $3.4 billion to resolve rust claims from truck owners

Rust can be a problem on nearly any vehicle, but on 1.5 million Toyota trucks and SUVs, it's proven to be especially bad. Now, the Japanese automaker has agreed to pony up $3.4 billion to settle a federal class action lawsuit related to rust.

The lawsuits claim that Toyota provided inadequate rust protection on certain Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra models. As a result, owners say that those vehicles' frames can corrode, ruining their structural integrity. Affected vehicles include:

• 2005-2008 Toyota Sequoia
• 2005-2010 Toyota Tacoma
• 2007-2008 Toyota Tundra

Toyota agreed to a settlement that amounts to roughly $15,060 per affected vehicle. That sum is based on an average figure of $60 for a vehicle inspection and $15,000 for frame replacement.

Note, however, that this isn't a recall, and that Toyota isn't planning to replace 1.5 million vehicle frames. In fact, the automaker admitted no liability or wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement.

Instead, Toyota will:

• provide compensation to owners;
• inspect frames for 12 years from the day that vehicles were first sold/leased; and,
• reimburse owners who've already paid for frame replacement.

In addition to the $3.4 billion settlement, Toyota will also pay $10 million for costs related to the lawsuit, $9.75 million of which will go to plaintiffs' attorneys.

Anyone know the details on the providing compensation to owners yet?

 

Wouldn't the compensation be replacing the frame and related parts? As well as putting you up in a rental vehicle for the length of time it takes to replace the frame.

 

That's my guess, but there were a lot of trucks that did not get the new frame. Note that they said it would be inspected 12 years after purchase/lease...

I have a new frame, I don't think, unless something goes terribly wrong with my frame in the next 2 years, that I'd see anything else on the settlement.

 

So is the March31 2016 cut off null at this point? Has it in fact been extended?
