I check mine every oil change. Its all relative to the enviroment the truck is used in, there is no rule of thumb for when one needs to be changed.

 

I'm assuming "i'll know" when to change just by looking...thanks guys!

 

I change them out every oil change, if I'm using replaceable. I recharge ever oil change (5k, k&n drop in) if not more often. However, I am in the desert. The cleaner it is, the better it breaths. That's always a good thing, and they're cheap. Especially if you get an AFE dry... wash it, let it dry, and it's good as new.

 

i changed mine around 17K miles. it was dirty as fuck too.

 

Exactly. I went through one dust storm in the Yuha desert and mine was done.

 

make sure when you change it you clean out the rectangular box that you took it out of because there could be some dirt and grime in there.

 

I had mine done at 15K, it was not to dirty, I use stock Taco or Fram. I live in central Mass. I would like to try the K&N or the wash and dry type. My neighbors who have 04's use k&n all the time.
I am having the truck serviced for the 30K this week and will have them replace the filter if necessary.

I replaced mine at about 43K. It wasn't terrible, but it was definitely time for a change.

 

I changed mine to an AFE Super Dry the first week I had it. Mind you I got mine used from my Dad. He had it serviced right by the book at the local Toyota dealer. Don't notice any gas mileage increase, but she sounds more like a truck now!!!!

30k but i'll be doing it every 3 oil change since its only about $15.

 

I change mine out once a year, about 10,000mi, with the OEM Toyota filter.

 

my last truck..chevy. i used stock..went to a K&N drop in, then a CAI..i went back to stock after seeing all the oily, dusty film downstream.

i change air filters now upon inspection. last time, i followed a pair of 4x4 sportmobile vans, down many miles of dirt road. the crap in my filter was amazing.

 

Does anyone have a picture of where the air filter would be on a 2009 V6 and instructions how to change it? I saw the great instructions for changing the 4banger air filter but I Just popped the hood of my taco for the first time since the day i bought it a month ago....thought it would be more obvious!

I'm a newcomer to working on my truck. Actually It's the first new vehicle I've ever owned! I just moved back home after traveling for work for the past 5 years. My dad is handy and said he'd help me work on it. Tried google etc, no clear cut instructions yet.

 

This isn't a Tacoma engine compartment, but your air intake will look the same. Undo the two clips (refer to arrows) and pull back on the assembly to the left. You'll see the old air filter there. Pop it put, wipe out any dirt, dust, or leaves out of there, insert new air filter, pop the assembly back into place and fasten clips.

 

found where the air filter box is located.....there are two clips towards the front but is there anything holding it in the back? Do I have to unscrew the clamp on the hose?
