The above is not a warrenty claim, a manufacturer warrenty claim is for a failure of a part due to improper manufacturing or assembly. Leaving a cap off or a drain bolt loose so it falls off is outside the scope of the typical manufacturer warrenty claim in most if not all instances.

Now, if it was done by the manufacturers proxy, the dealer, then yes, it could be covered but in that case, the dealer would likely be partly financially liable to the manufacturer due to negligence of the employee.

I can assure the poster that those types of failures don't happen when I do routine maintenance simply because I take my time and double check all my work during the wipe down phase and the keys don't go in the ignition until the work is done. I am under no time constaints and in no rush, thus, gross negligence failures are reduced to a percentage far lower then at a dealer or quickie change place. [in fact, after almost 40 years of doing my own oil changes, I am still batting 1000.

One, I said a REPUTABLE car shop. They do exist, I promise. I agree that some are very shady, I have seen and heard the stories. Do your research first.

Two, I suggested doing the oil yourself. It's not hard at all.

No need to be an ass.

Yes that is it. Like I said I wasn't 100% positive on the 4 cyl Taco. I don't do oil changes, but almost all the 0w-20 motors have the 10,000 mile interval, that is why I made that comment. And I even stated "if that." Which to my point, the OP said he rotated the tires at 5,000 but took it in for the oil change at 10,000 miles which is incorrect looking at that chart.

According to the chart the color of the cells background determines the mileage interval. The synthetic ones show the off yellow color which is the same as the other 5,000 mile vehicles. The only difference is that they get 0W-20. Plus the key in the upper left shows blue letters with !!! which also says syn oil at 5,000.

Don't own a 3rd gen, my sig says 2011 DCLB. 2nd gen 5.5qts 5w-30 5,000 miles. Our dealership hasn't gotten any new 3rd gens as inventory or any in for service. Was only commenting regarding older Tacos and other 0w-20 motors. I'm just surprised it was changed to 10k miles for syn oil Taocs. The older ones that took 0W-20 were still changed at 5,000 miles.

I don't believe anyone here was talking about someone screwing up like this and then fraudulently trying to claim it under the manuf warranty.

Human error isn't covered by the manufacturer warranty, regardless of who commits it.

If you drive 100 miles a day, then you must be spending time on the high way. That's the best thing for your truck. The oil gets completely up to temp thus cooking off any moisture that is in the oil. This is what breaks down oil.

If you would have done an oil analysis, you would find that the oil was still doing its job.

Yes, the dealer dropped the ball, but you did too. $40k on a vehicle, I would think closer attention to maintenance detail would be the norm.

Every Toyota built is logged into the Toyota owners website. All maintanance performed by dealer is recorded. You can look at any time from your own computer or phone.

Sorry not reading all the previous post, so if I double posted what was said all ready, I apologize.

OP, did you call corporate and inform them of the 20,300 mile first oil change? I would do this before speaking to anyone at the dealership

yes. My 2011 Tundra was 10k too.
As far as doing the service yourself,
you can always document it in Toyota.com the owners section any service work you do yourself.
All the work the dealers do get documented in there as well.
It is setup per the VIN.
    That is what I do.

The dealer will reimburse you for maintenance done else where? Good luck on that one. I'm afraid the sales manager was doing what most sales managers do, telling you anything to get you to drive off in a new truck. There is no way a dealership will reimburse you for maintenance done elsewhere, when it's free at the dealership. Unless that is a Toyota program, that I'm sure does not exist. Toyota isn't giving away the first 2 years of service because they are nice guys. They do it, so you get familiar with the dealership, so you keep going back after the free 2 years is up. It's the same reason a lot of dealers will pay for your first oil change if there is no free maintenance from the manufacturer.

All the free maintenance programs will only change the oil when the light comes on or at whenever the manual says to do it. It's not your choice. If you want it done before the recommended interval, you have to pay for it. Some dealerships won't change it even if you offer to pay. There is a BMW dealership near me, that won't change the oil before it the light comes on, even if you offer to pay. During the free maintenance period.

It's not worth the 1 1/2 hour wait in the dealer service drive to save $35 I could spend at a oil change place that I trust. Plus no 10 minute sales pitch on what extra services they say I need.

Legally a manufacturer can't require maintenance be done at a dealership unless it's provided for free. I've worked for an extended warranty company, and if you buy your own oil, keep the receipts, and write the mileage on them, that is proof. They aren't trying to get out of a warranty repair. They will only ask for receipts if they think you didn't do the maintenance that caused the failure. They won't ask for receipts for oil changes if the A/C goes out. If your motor is seized at 30K, you will need proof oil changes were done, and receipts from a parts store will qualify, if they have the date printed on them and it's legit. Now if you change your own oil and don't put in the recommended oil, then your toast. I've seen guys on this forum recommending people change the type of oil in their differential. THAT will void the warranty if there is an issue.
