Re torque ing the wheels

So I scored some new xd wheels today, very excitied about that, but not sure how to torque them down now.

The store said to re torque them at 100 miles, I am almost at 85 with some driving tomorrow to do. I do not believe my original lug wrench tool that came with the truck will work on the new lug nuts... now what do I do?

Also, they gave me some kind of wheel code, what the heck do I do with that? I do not recall and instructions coming with my wheels.

What do you mean by wheel code? Doesn't a regular torque wrench with a box end socket do the trick? BTW, it should be torqued to about 85 ft/lbs.

 

Get the proper socket size and a torque wrench....and torque away.

You can re-torque your wheels everyday for eternity if you wanted to. Doesn't matter when you do it. You can check them now if you want. The whole idea is to make sure they're not coming loose. And, using a torque wrench ensures all the lugs are the same (this is important).

I have no idea what the wheel code would be for? Would that be for some sort of locking lug nut 'key' perhaps?

I torque all my vehicles at 100ft lbs.

The code could very well be for the lug nut lock key as mentioned. Keep that in a safe place. If you lose the key you'll need it for a new one.

 

thanks all. I went to autozone yesterday to rent a torque wrench and believe it or not they wanted $40 to rent it for 5 minutes... That is just crazy. I cannot beleive they wanted so much when I can get a new craftsman one for 80 from sears. Anyway, I decided to just buy a $12 lug wrench that would fit the new lug nuts, 3/4 inch and tighten them down as much as I could with some arm power. I will just have to take them back to discount tire (the store I bought them at) and have them do it for me. They offered to do it for free it just needed to be done about 100 miles after I bought them. Well that time came on sunday when they were closed thus all the rig-a-ma-round.

 

Understand lug nuts should be torqued to 82 NM

 

I always thought Autozone's policy is rental is basically free as the rental charges are returned to you upon receipt of the tool. I would still use a torque wrench opposed to tightening by "feel" IMHO especially with such nice wheels.

 

It's more like 85 FT*LBS....which is more like 115 N*M.

 

You probably overtightened them if you used all your arm power.

I bought a torque wrench from harbor freight for $10. Has lasted fine the last 3 years.
