Hey all, this is my first post and i must say, i cant get enough of this msg board!

anyways, i found the tacoma i want and i was wondering if i could get a little advice from all you seasoned car buyers/owners. im looking at an 06 dc sport with 40k on it. The dealer is asking $20,500 and with that in mind what would YOU pay? if you have any used car buying tips itd be much appreciated. this is my first vehicle purchase and im not looking to get eaten alive...

Do your research on edmunds.com, nada.com and kbb.com too.

Sounds exactly what I purchased back in May of last year. I have a DC '06 Prerunner and it had 38k miles when I bought it and I paid 17.5k for it.

If it is in EXCELLENT condition then it will bring that price. Sounds a little on the high side for a 2wd, but then again it is a dc?

According to KBB in your zip code, an 06 DC prerunner with short bed, auto tranny and 40k miles, retail would be around $22,800. Thats all I could input with info given and some guessing on my part. Private party price in excellent condition would be around $18k. I would guess $20-21k would be a decent price from a dealer if in great shape.

Private party with records is the best way to go, buy the owner not the truck. I bought last month after looking for 6 months. I only considered 1 owner, no paint work, with records truck. I wanted side air bags and never found any 2006 trucks. 2007 trd 2K sold for 19,200 I just missed this truck. I ended up buying a 2010 with 11K for just over 22K. KBB is crap. Look at edmunds.com the most your truck is worth is 16K. Below is
Residual Value from toyota on a trd sport. Good luck

Edmonds has always been known for their low ball pricing on vehicles. Dealers use them to access trade in value only (their benefit). They go to other resources for selling pricing. If KBB were "crap" they would be out of business. KBB was also the standard before the Internet...hence..."Kelly Blue Book". There was one on every appraisers desk. I stand by my previous post however if you can get it around the price that JW 72 suggests, I would too!:D

While $20.5K sounds a bit high for an 06 with 40K miles, I'd pay it in a heartbeat if I were convinced the truck was well maintained. If it is accident free, no dealer maintenance history of recurring problems, looks, runs, and feels like new - and is what you want, buy it.

Are they offering any kind of extended warranty with this deal? If that's a "Certified Used Vehicle" that price isn't bad.

If they're asking 20.5k and you offer 14.5k they're going to laugh at you and point you to the door. That said, you have absolutely nothing to lose for trying :D

I have been out of the market for a month, but went back to my old stomping ground Craigslist OC under private party tacoma new posting 1/2 the miles and a year newer. Still has toyota warranty so you can buy an extended if you want. I think they go 850 bucks. I think it is over 3K less than KBB. good luck

Yea, I agree 14.5 is low. The only 2006 trucks I ever saw under 15K had over 100K miles on them.

I think it's harder to buy used. With new vehicles nowadays, you can go in armed with invoice costs and such. You don't know what the dealer got this used truck for, and they have an idea of what kind of profit they need to make from it. Less "knowns" for a buyer of a used truck. Good luck, but don't be surprised if they don't come down to $17k. It just all depends...

the dealer probably took it in on a trade for around 16k. i have some experience in the market. they more than likely put some work and money ( 1k-1.5k) to get it to used showroom condition. so with this being said i would say go with an offer of about 17.5k. thats 3k less than what there asking. i agree with Jake that if you offer 14k they will probably tell you to hit the bricks. they need to make a buck also. so go in at 17k-17.5k. good luck.

Make sure you start it cold after it has been sitting all night. Some toyota engines knock when started cold and it is said to be normal by Toyota. It may run along time, but you will hear it knock every cold morning.

I completely agree with you guys they're gonna send me packin' BUT the way i see you gotta start somewhere and better to start low and work your way up, you know? and who knows what they are willing to take for it?! i figure you gotta be willing to lose it if you wanna good deal on it. after all, it is a mass produced truck and there will more out there. if i get it for 17k i'd be happy with my buy. thats what im aiming for anyways.
