cranking the truck without oil?

alright so i was talking to my dad the other day when i was changing my oil. we got to talking about weights and whatever else, he used to do like 10w-40 on his old thing and was amazed with the weights recommended now days.

got under the truck pulled the drain plug and let it drain blah blah then started putting oil in. my dads was like: "you didnt crank it for a few seconds after you drained the oil?" i was like WTF? then he explain, not very well, what it did and all i got out of him was that he said after doing that, he got a lot of "gunky shit" out (supposedly).

keep in mind that the car he did this on could probably run on hopes and dreams without anything in it. so my question is: is that good for your engine to do something like that?

You can cause engine damage, and or cause the engine to jam up.

 

i wouldnt touch the key with no oil in my truck. Ive already had a couple engines from old vehicles go to crap because the oil level was down.

Not sure it would help anything. I think it would do more harm then good

 

If you have been using good oil and doing regular changes- Not something I would mess about with personally....but ::shrug::

Yes have heard of it, and it has been talked about on here too. I have seen some people do this, and get the engine stuck, and it would not turn over.

I'm not sure if this is something they did a lot back in the day, but it would be crazy to do it now. lol

iv learned, after almost 21 years, that somethings you listen to your dad about...things like this with modern vehicles and such, no way!

if i did listen to him though, it would have been his fault and i would be getting that 5.7 iforce alot quicker

 

I heard you are supposed to drive on your bare rims for a few miles before you mount new tires too. Makes the bead seat better.

Another difference is that what your talking about is much more damaging to the truck than what I said.

 

On a regular oil change, you're getting the majority of the crap out with the old oil anyways. If you crank it, I can see some components getting shredded, causing more crap to float around in the crankcase.

If you really want to clean out the crankcase, use flushing oils. But this is not usually necessary if you've been changing your oil regularly and not using dirt as a lubricant and such.

Never cranked an engine without oil in the pan.

I did however use to drive on new tire about 500 miles before balancing them. A lot of time the ru-glyde will cause the tires to actually moves on the rims. Uses tire crayon to prove this. The Old BF Goodrich Radial T/A were so out od round used a dial indicator to measure the run out of the rim and move the high side of the BFG tire to the low point on the rim. Also used to send BFG's to a local tire shop to have them trued before balancing.

Get this: my motorcycle manual says to kick the engine over a few times after draining the oil "to get the remaining used oil out of the oil pump" or something to that effect. Some people have done this and resulted in an oil pump that was no longer primed and not pumping oil after the engine started. (Fortunately the engine made some noise before it blew up, so they shut it down and were able to prime the oil pump before restarting.) Personally, I have never been comfortable kicking or cranking any engine unless the case is full of oil. I say don't do it.

 

You'd be amazed at how long an engine will run with no oil in it. Usually more than a few minutes.

There's a lot of oil left in the engine after you drain it. Enough that a couple cranks won't hurt anything. However, I would highly suggest not allowing it to start, that will cause damage almost immediately. I'd also say there is no benefit to cranking it over. You'd be better off to just let it drip for an hour or two.

 

A long time ago I was at this hillbilly town spring fest- thing, and the evenings main entertainment was a lynard skynard cover band followed by the event organizers running a ford fairmont station wagon with no oil. They sold people raffle tickets on how long it would run. It actually went almost 5 minutes before it stalled....I lost 5 bucks.

 

Don't forget to clean the cylinders with water after you've drained all the oil. Then run it to get everything out.

 

You tube is full of cash4clunker engine kills. One fellow who worked at a dealer reported the range of 20 seconds to 20 min. iirc. Not sure how long this ran before the video starts but it's almost 10 min to kill with liquid glass instead of oil....

Back to burping the oil out--we used to do it, but it's not needed unless you've got some 25000 mile oil in there. Otherwise, just put in two clean quarts, run it 10 seconds and drain again if you must get out as much old oil as you can.....
