The 265/70/17 Falken Wildepeak AT3w are gaining traction on the forum, they may not be the most popular tire on the planet or on this forum at all. But they have an aggressive look and have been told they do really well on the road and offroad. I'm like 90% Road and 10% offroad, so they were perfect for me. There's a huge forum about them that i'll link below and Discount Tire Direct is having a really good deal on them right now. I just purchased some and they come in Friday, so i'll be writing a review shortly! I got them for $456 SHIPPED!!

Here's the link to the forum post about them and where to purchase them for the price I got them for.

I didn't say they don't fair okay. I said they aren't a "highway" or "commuter" tire. The reason Toyota put the Toyo tires on his Sport is because they are a "highway" type fuel rated tire. Much like the cheap Dunflop AT20's were.

I drive the interstate at 75-80MPH to and from work every day with my ST MAXX. But they weren't designed specifically for that.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
@Aussiek2000 I'm about to put 285/75/16 STT Pros on stock OR wheels. I'm assuming wheel spacers are required for wheeling? Getting cab mount chopped next fri and I have a steel bumper already. 3" spacer lift on front right now while I'm waiting for my Icons. 700lb springs were special order and it will be a couple months before I get them. I'm expecting to lose some lift in front once I put the coilovers on as I don't want to preload any more than I have to.

I can get the CMC done this weekend but the 285s won't be on yet. The guys said they want the tires on there but I don't ever want to have to cut anymore, and I'm going to get different wheel and tire setups down the road. So how much should I tell them to cut/what would definitely be enough. I'm not planning on ever putting 35s on, but want to allow for different backspacing, offset etc.

In my opinion most tires are great.....for the first 5-10,000 miles...Are you looking for a soft tire that's great for awhile or something that will last for several years and still is a good all around tire?

There is usually give and take for tires.

The stock rims won't make the tires wear in the middle? I have no idea, but they seem pretty wide for stock wheels.

Yeah they are. The STT Pros are narrower than most other 285s though from my understanding. Hopefully it will be OK, anyone have opinion?

I have the terra grapplers on my other truck. Have had issues with wear and they are loud now that they are wearing.

Duratrac is my tire of choice. With the Tacoma being lighter they will last forever.

Just as wide if not wider. 1" wider than the 285 nittos on my dad's truck. Mine measure around 11" on a 8.5 wheel

So will they work on these stock rims?

they're going to bulge pretty good, but they should fit. Like I said, you'll need a spacer to clear the control arm

I already put on total chaos ucas and will order spidertrax 1.25" spacers.

Maybe I should just go ahead and order wheels even though I hate spending the money on them. If Im buying wheels I will get 17" beadlocks. Do tire shops give any bullshit for beadlocks that are "off road only"? I like the method 105s if I have to buy wheels but are there any others you guys like?

can you explain why you think they aren't a highway or commuter tire?
I had them on my old jeep, they felt fine on the highway when driving out to the trails.
I was planning on getting them for the taco. Never daily drove them but each weekend driving to the trails with the jeep they always seemed fine.

I want something that is good on the road, that will last. I also need something that will deal with snow (I don't use snow tires) and when I do get out in the dirt roads or what little trail driving I will do, something that can manage that. The Toyos on it would probably be ok, however I know factory tires are crap long term and would rather put something on now that will last a while. With my 09, when it was time for tires I was broke and needed to cheap out on them, not to mention i was pissed I needed to put tires on, I think I was at about 30k miles. If I was to keep the 09, I would be putting on new tires anyways as 3 of the 4 need air once a week, and the tread isn't the best. I learned that cheap tires do not hold up to the abusive driving I do on the gravel roads or a little off roading.

get the Falken wildpeak ATw3..Really like mine. they are just about as quiet on the highway as the stock toyos are. can barely hear them. very smooth on highway as well. aggressive look and most reviews have been very positive as well. Plus they are snowflake rated for sever snow. plus cant beat the price and have a 55,000 mile warranty

Be careful when comparing the "tread warranty". I paid out the nose for a set if Michelin sedan tires, because they had a 90K treadlife warranty. 35K in, one already needed to be replaced, and the other three weren't far behind. It was a commuter car and I didn't do any crazy driving. Hard to hot rod in an Elantra. I took it back to the tire dealer, and Michelin wanted proof I rotated the tires every 5000 miles, If I went more than 700 miles past the 5000 mile mark, it voided the warranty. I rotated them about every 6000 miles, because shit happens, and I'm busy. The tires weren't cupped or worn unevenly. I even had the car aligned when I put the tires on it, so they couldn't claim it was the alignment. Those warranties are written by the same lawyer that writes the mattress warranties. Your best bet is to see what mileage other people have been getting on tires, instead of look at the warranty. I think Discount Tire and Tire rack have a good amount of reviews that you can get a feel for the tire performance. Had I looked up mine before I bought them, I would have seen a ton of complaints about them wearing out at 40K.
