Someone Was Snooping Around My House!!!

During the middle of the night last night I woke up to my dog barking aggressively and someone was near one of my garages. Later I found out it's a known meth head that lives about 500 yards away.

So does anyone have any home security tips? I have a couple motion detector lights and a home security system. But, it will take police over 10 minutes to get here. So at this point I'm just trying to save my butt and eliminate or minimize my losses.

 

Be careful with the drug addicts, no telling if they are carrying a gun or not. Keep everything locked up as best you can. Video surveillance will help get him out of way for a while.

 

We had someone come to our house, look through the windows using a cellphone and then knock on the front door.

We keep a gun in the house, but I bought some solar panel motion detector lights.

I still want to add 2-3 security cameras to the house. But I'm still thinking about placement.

 

I see greasy forehead and nose prints on my cars' windows every now and then in the mornings - someone snooping around for something valuable. There have been a few reported cases of soft break-ins (cars that were left unlocked) in the neighborhood. I hate thieves. I wish I can set some type of booby-trap for the f**kers.

 

It's unfortunate that contact-poisons aren't legal.

Edit: to be clear, I'm not talking about anything lethal. Just something to dissuade the individual by way of temporary extreme discomfort, like maybe a super fast acting laxative.

 

Does this hook up to wifi? I have wifi but it has limited data. Live monitoring would be sweet.

 

This is pretty nice for the price. I have actually been looking at Network DVRs and found that some will run Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you don't even need to run ac to the camera. I think I might go that route for less wiring headaches when I get around to picking one up.

 

Im going to drill my gun safe into the ground and put all my guns in there. And put in an extra motion detector downstairs hooked up to the alarm system. Any ideas on where to hide things?

With wanting to put a few outside in remote locations, regular power + wifi works better for my need. Otherwise, I'd be all over PoE.

 

Yes. I have the same setup, best money spent in home defense. Add a couple of WARNING signs in the yard stating you are video taping and BOOM: one more layer of home security.

I can see my home on my phone, laptop, etc. Hard wired running into my home office and into the modem so you can simply click a button and see your home. I also have motion detector lights front and back, works wonders. I have a dedicated small monitor (small old TV) that sits in my office and I can see outside, back and front, 24/7 without even getting up. Everything is recorded as well.

Also great for just not opening the door for solicitors, big deal around here (Houston). glance at your phone or laptop and keep going about your business inside your home. No guessing, no window peering. If you do it, I recommend wired cameras and I know its a bitch but the wireless can be unreliable, produce static, etc. and like my guns, I want 100 reliability when you need it. Buy once, cry once.

And buy a gun, get training and a gun safe and be smart, be safe.

Generally speaking, thieves will look to master bedrooms / closets first and foremost as that's where jewelry and guns are most often kept.

As for other spots... I'll just suggest you try to think like someone breaking into a house and looking for valuables. Where will you look first? How long will you think you have before you need to GTFO?

Definitely secure any safes. Something they can cart off does you no good whatsoever.

 

Decent setup for the price. I use to work for a CCTV company as an installer. Just as a helpful insight, you need to adjust most of your cameras down so you're not looking at trees. It's wasted video. Unless you're trying to find a thieving squirrel or something lol.

 

Have you contacted the local Law Enforcement? I recommend that you at least inform them, so they can increase patrols in your area.

Aside from that:

 

this makes the most sense, instead of buying high priced surveillance gizmos contact the police and maybe they will step up some presence in your area and catch the perp. and then crack off a few shotgun blasts at night wouldn't hurt either

 

I'll just buy it and hope it doesn't use too much data.

A lot of good info. I temporarily put up some game cameras. I'm checking out my wired video options right now. I just have to figure out the online storage and how much data since it'll constantly be using data. I might have to suck it up and pay the extra data every month.

Guns... All my hobbys include them. It's been awhile since I've had to take a class.

If anyone has some good knowledge or links on how to keep yourself safe legally. It would be appreciated.

Im getting some lag bolts today. It's a huge safe but anything is possible it just depends on how bad they want it.

I called them this morning and asked. Hopefully they are around if he gets in and the home alarm does it's job. If it gets bypassed or he gets out of the yard before police get there he will get away.

 

We've had this issue before and I installed an 8 camera surveillance system. It's a swann system that I bought from BestBuy and I'm pleased with it so far. We had a sign made that reads "Home under 24 hour video surveillance recorded off premises. I see you reading me". I can monitor the cameras from my phone and also from my desk here at work. I also installed Dusk til Dawn Flood lights with LED bulbs on all four corners of the house. We fenced in the front yard, a little over an acre, and put a gate at the end of our drive. It's a 5 foot fence.
Our German Shepherd came unglued one night and attacked the back door. That one instance prompted the security measures. Our back yard is only fenced with barbed wire but that is to keep the cows out....we live out in the county. It wouldn't hurt to put up a trail camera or two until you can take security measures. That way if the meth head comes back, you will have photo's of him so you can press charges for trespassing. These are some of the steps we took. Hope this helps.
