Changed the rear diff oil at 6k miles in my 2013... nastiest diff oil i have ever seen... trust me, you want to get the break in diff oil OUT of the truck before 10k miles FOR SURE.

OP any 75w-90 oil will do... mechanical LSD's havnt been in the 2nd gens since 08.

Your choice in gear oils is your business, but.....

The metal shavings on the magnet have nothing to do with the gear oil. Maybe the mfg. of the gear oil threw this out? Hopefully not.

The metal shavings on the magnet are there because they are metal and magnets attract metal.

    Class dismissed.

Correct, but think of all of the shavings that still remain in suspension due to the magnet being "full". No harm will ever be done due to gear oil being too clean.

    Class dismissed?

I always try to get break out shavings early, no matter what. You should see me with any four stroke power equipment (snowblower, generator, etc). I go overboard there. Is it needed or will you have something break down, probably not. But, i do think it could provide better performance over its life, maybe keeping tighter tolerances.

First gen guy here, change tcase oil every 10000 cause I use 4Low a lot and change the differentials every 30000. Don't lump all the 1st gens into your poor maintenance interval.

    :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Gear oil does NOT last forever and will stop working effectively the longer you go without changing it. Just like motor oil. Eventually it will just be a useless sludge. Can't believe I read that lol.

I thought you pulled a dime out of your rear diff for a second there, lol.

Those pieces of metal look concerning...I've never had anything like that come out of my rear diff on my 2004 Tacoma, and I wheel it pretty hard.

And that is why we follow preventive maintenance. So that we don't do costly repairs instead. Good job OP.

I think 250k mile guy was using the mystical Marvel Mystery Oil, and that's why he got so many miles.....:burp:

i had the same pieces in mine!! as a machinist myself, i diagnosed them as a drill tip breakthrough during the manufacturing process. they're heavy enough they should have gone straight to the magnet.

^^ this!! And the reason is because Toyota stopped using true LSD's early in the 2nd gen life cycle, relying instead on open diffs and computer controlled individual wheel braking.

Changed the drive-line fluids today (~27,xxx on the clock):
-transmission: Red Line MT90 75w90 (GL-4 is required)
    -transfer-case: Mobil 1 75w90 (Gl-4 or GL-5 is required)
-rear differential: Mobil 1 75w90 (GL-5 is required)
-front differential: Mobil 1 75w90 (GL-5 is required)

Used Red Line MT90 75w90 for the transmission, then put the remainder of 3rd bottle into the tranfer-case and mixed it with the Mobil 1 75w90. In total 9 qts are required to do the full drive-line.

These were great resources for fluid choices:
    -GL-4 v. GL-5

-Toyota's outline of capacities, capacities, and viscosity requirements for the Tacoma
    http://www.ttguide.net/maintenance_data_fuel_oil_level_etc_-158.html

All-in-all, super easy job. Just had to buy 10mm hex socket and 24mm 6 point socket as those aren't typically included in most tools sets.

Typical sludge was on magnets and fluid was no dirtier than anticipated.

Found this in the rear differential, attached to the plug's magnet:

That piece of metal looks just like what the guy posted a few days ago in this thread, up above. Guess it's common...I've never had any thing like that come out of my diff
