sounds like R2D2 is in my engine! what's that noise about 15 seconds after startup?

my guess is some sort of door closing, maybe the engine uses more air when it's starting up?

Service dude told me it was the transmission servos.

    I kinda doubt it.

Sounds like "flaps up" to me.

I always thought it was something to do with ABS also. Never really worried about it though.

You guys can hear shit when you start your vehicle besides the engine? Only thing I hear is Metallica's 'Battery' being blasted.

That is crazy.... I was just thinking about this very subject as i have heard it over the last couple of days and thought about posting this very question....

I have to back out of my parking space and right when i start forward i hear the whirring noise. I have been wondering what the hell it is. Sounds like it is coming from the middle of the back of the inside of my access cab (at least to me it does). only hear it with the radio off and if it is quiet but it is there.

    huh.

As others have hinted at, it is the ABS calibrating itsself. Completely normal.

Yeah, I've often wondered what the noise was. Never thought it was a troubling noise.

thank you, i wasn't alarmed, just wondering.

but yet, what exactly does it mean that the ABS is calibrating itself? what is happening? where exactly is it coming from?

Yup, it's the ABS. Cool noise too......
Any passengers that ask, I tell them it's the ejection seat powering up.

An old thread, but I've been wondering what my 2015 Tacoma PreRunner V6 has been doing first thing in the A.M. - only does this when engine is cold.

About 20-25 secs. after I start it up, I hear what sounds like someone clearing their throat. Lasts for all of 1 sec. My other Toyota vehicles ABS systems start talking when I put it in D and gently pull out - not during startup.

I'm more suspicious of an air pump or secondary air injection. Will get a mechanics stethescope on it when I get a chance.

My truck makes the same sound. I think it's the electric air pump.
