This! I think the truck is just saving mpgs. The ect button fixes it like putting our audis in S.

Off topic, i sold my S5. I couldn't find an RS5 to run me. I had stage 2 apr, it was really fast.

Also, I'll say: the media system in the Tacoma is WAY better than the Audi MMI. I had the updated one too.. 3G or whatever. 2013.

Nice! I'm a long time Audi owner. Currently own a RS4, RS5 and the wife drives a SQ5. The Tacoma is my 3rd Toyota product. I'm really enjoying the truck despite the shift patterns.

but I did experience the downshift 6-5 while in cruise control and it didn't shift back 5-6 and speed remained the same. Turned off cruise, turned it back on, back to 6th

My guess is that this will address the shift flare only. That would be good since I've suspected it was a hardware issue. If they can mitigate with firmware that would be good, not great but good.

The odd shifting is likely just the way it is, but I could be wrong and they might tighten that up as well.

    I'll remain hopeful.

It's valuable to have different perspectives on the "transmission issue," "thank you for this."

Oh you meant thank you. Gotcha. You're welcome. Imagine if these things had a 7 speed!! People would swear toyota is having a lemonade sale.

Agreed, I think apart of the issues with the Taco 6speed is folks don't like the searching for best gear for best MPG. I know I don't like it, but, Toyota was under the gun to get better MPG and this is what we have. However, indeed, other tranny issues have raised their ugly head. So we move forward and see what Toyota comes up with. I've owned many Tacos in the past all had "issues." My 2009 was the worst too many issue to list, I finally gave up and sold her. I think 6sp tranny issue will be resolved just when is the question here....

I think theyre going to have to sacrifice MPGs for this "fix". I remember 7th gear was absolutely useless on my S5. On the interstate weaving in and out of traffic, I'd swap between 5-6-7 constantly.

Excellent theory , consider the following
Lexus GS 350...........311 HP @ 6400 RPM powered by premium fuel....8 speed trans. Better fuel economy than Tacoma.............no searching for gears

Tacoma ...................278 HP @6000 RPM powered by regular fuel......6 speed trans. Less fuel economy
    Than GS..........gear searcher

Both vehicles are powered by same engine 2 GS-FKS
Tacoma curb wt. double cab V6 Auto. 4X4
    Lexus Curb.wt. 350 GS V6 Auto. RWD

Moral to this story, a passenger car engine should remain in a car, not transplanted in a truck,I have owned both, the 350 was quick without searching for gears.
Based on the evidence many Tacoma owners have experienced, it appears Toyota has regressed on the way to the future.
Not to be fooled, Toyota has a problem that must be corrected, we the Tacoma owners are the field testers. Toyota will resolve the drivetrain issues ..........sooner than later hopefully.
    Curb wt. Tacoma. 4425
    Curb wt. Lexus. 3891

Correction to engine model number 2GR-FKS

I agree that they put the 3.5 basic car engine in the Tacoma and I just ass-u-me-d that it was a better built version. Maybe thicker rods and longer piston skirts with a beefier crank etc. Sort of like how the old Chevy 350 car and 350 truck engines were different. I do love the mpg. Hate the tranny. Mine only has issues from 15 to 35 mph. Beyond that it shifts fine even after the original TSB went away. The original TSB absolutely permanently, thus far, fixed the delays to and from reverse and drive. The biggest trouble for me is the thing wants to be in 4th gear at 25 mph. The ect eliminates that issue. When I am in cruise control running 38 mph it is great being in 4th or 5th because it helps me get 20 mpg in town. I could live with a compromise in mpg to regain the power in low speeds. Just as long as it still gets 17.5 or better in town which is much better than my 2nd gen. I actually get the same or better mpg than my 2.7 liter automatic in my 1st gen Prerunner reg cab which is awesome. Funny thing is my original concerns were with the durability and performance of the Atkinson cycle v6. Never expected transmission issues since my 1st and 2nd gen had bulletproof transmissions (and engines). I know I cannot wait for the NEXT fix. For those that never got the original TSB, and needed it, you were saved the disappointment that it only lasted 1000 to 1500 miles like mine.

Ive been running 91 in my Tacoma for the past month and half and probably wont be going back to 87. I think it makes enough of a difference after it learns.

I have a brand new (latest date code) transmission, and the latest code as of last week. I can tell you, there is some improvement, however, there is more work to be done on the valve body, TCU code and the Engine Management code. I spoke to Toyota today (not the customer service number) and they are working diligently on both the hardware and the code. The fix (that we see) will likely be in the code. Later models, perhaps 2018 or 2019, may see better valve bodies or a new transmission all together.

I don't care if they put peanut butter in my transmission as long as it fixes it. Hey just kidding Toyota Corporation.

I also have a 2017, built Sept 29th. I have the same issue with the 2nd to 1st when coming to a stop, it feels like it slams into first gear(only happens occasionally). I've never noticed a delay going from park to drive. You guys think my truck has had the TSB done?

Brad, glad Toyota bolted up the most updated version , wow sounds as we have a ways to go. We all, corporate, owners, dealers, all impacted parties are exhausted with problems and those affected Tacoma owners are full with frustration. Toyota we have waited coming up on one year for a correct fix, throwing darts just is not working, Tacoma customers are very loyal however many have elected to dispose of their less than worthy successor to generation two. Toyota , you are much too wise to have engineered the current Tacoma engine/ transmission offering in it's current configuration. Tighten up your laces Toyota and get in the ring.

One positive note is that even with the current drivetrain it performs excellent off-road. I'm truly impressed and grateful that Toyota didn't cut corners on the OR performance.

Maybe I'll just lift it and use it for a weekend hauler. The sad part is that this truck is one dimensional in it's current state..

BTW, the argument that multi speed transmissions have to behave like this is complete BS. I've driven 10 speeds in heavier vehicles that were exceptional.

This trans is really unrefined and not ready for primetime.

I look at it this way. If I was in the market for a good used truck with 100,000 miles on it then at first I would love the way my truck looks. After a quick test drive I would return it for fear the transmission may be on its way out and I would maybe drive one more. If a 2nd one had the same screwed up shift pattern I would return it and look for another brand. Now mine has 8,000 miles and shifts this poorly. Problem is I can't return it. So I am stuck with it until Toyota comes up with the real fix. Say the fix comes out next week. How long will the next TSB last. Will this pattern return after the warranty is used up. Then will anyone buy it. Do I then quote Toyota and tell people this is normal. It is a scary situation indeed. Beyond the warranty will anyone want to spend $3500 or more for another transmission. If so will it have the same "normal" shift issues. Just a thought.
