*02DEC2016 UPDATE - There have been changes along the way with Rev 1 and in order to save everyone the read, the most recent version of Rev 1 is attached below.

    tsb-077-016 rev1 (15NOV2016).pdf

Provided by both Murrayb4 on page 17 and bradwhitenikki on page 29 of the thread.

(previous version left in place for history)

    Short Story:

I learned on 10/26/2016 that T-SB-0077-16 has been recalled and is no longer available.

It has been replaced with T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 but it hasn't been released yet.

The TSB is attached at the bottom of this post or downloadable from this 3rd party site: https://www.pdf-archive.com/2016/10/27/t-sb-0077-16-rev1/

    Long Story:

Apologies in advance for the long story, but sometime you have to vent a little.

On October 20th 2016 I called and scheduled an appointment at my local dealership for the 5000-mile service. (It’s free and I wanted the following documented)

In addition to the 5000 mile service, I requested that they…

    * Apply T-SB-0077-16 to correct the delayed upshifts that would often occur while climbing a slight grade and would continue to not shift even after cresting the grade. And the hunting for gears that it likes to do while cruising on the highway, often between 70-75mph.

    * Manually inspect the transmission fluid, as it could be low from the factory.

The girl on the phone making the appointment says no problem and even documents the T-SB number in the appointment.

On October 26th 2016 I drop off my truck at 7:50am and the Service Advisor that was assigned to me wasn’t in yet so someone else signed me in. I confirmed with her that on top of the 5000 mile service, I wanted the T-SB performed and the transmission fluid checked. I explained the symptoms and the provided the T-SB number to her and she says, oh we’ve had a few of those come through here already and checking the transmission fluid won’t be a problem, but it will take some time. Can you leave the truck for a while? Yes, of course I tell her.

Fast-forward to 11:14am I receive a call from the service advisor originally assigned to me and he says that my truck is ready for pickup. I ask him about the T-SB and transmission fluid and he tells me the following. We were unable to replicate the symptoms that you described regarding your transmission. Oh and the T-SB-0077-16 you mentioned isn’t available so it wasn’t applied. No one has that T-SB available to perform, as it’s no longer released.

I was taking a half-day at work to get this done and had left the dealership to get a proper breakfast. Needless to say, I was back at the dealership and in front of my advisor in less than 15 minutes with a printed copy of T-SB-0077-16 (thanks to Tacoma World). I peppered him with all sorts of questions until he eventually got a lead tech on the phone to confirm that they couldn’t do the T-SB because it wasn’t available… the foreman was away at lunch already. My car had been there for over three hours now and all they had done was drive it around the block, rotate the tires and perform the multipoint inspection. I just sat there and continued to ask questions and he even admitted that they’ve had a few of these come through already that did get the T-SB but some of them came back. He even mentioned that one of them got lemoned.

I needed to walk away for a minute as I was pretty disappointed at this point but knew that I was going to speak with the foreman when I returned about the T-SB and I was also assured that my transmission fluid would be actually checked this time as well.

Fast forward to 12:59pm I receive a call from the service advisor stating that my truck is ready for pickup. No T-SB performed because there’s a NEW T-SB for this… but it hasn’t been release yet. WTF? And the transmission fluid was checked and it was within spec.

    That’s right… a NEW T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1

I’m back at the dealership within an hour of the call and my advisor looks to be gone for the day. Lights are off in the office and no one is in site. I had the front desk page him, twice. 5-6 minutes later a guy that I believe is the shop foreman shows up and asks if he can help. I explain who I am and which vehicle is mine and a light goes off in his head… oh yeah he says.

So the T-SB that you brought in is no longer valid so we didn’t perform it. There’s a new T-SB from this October that includes this previous one… but it’s not out yet. He was super nice about, especially after I explained that I’ve now missed a days work over this. I said the staff up front should be a little better informed. The staff in the back should have called the staff up front and told them what was really going on… and they should have called me to let me know all of this well before 2pm. Here’s the best part, he printed out the new T-SB and handed to me.

But… there’s always a but… there’s one last rub. So I then asked him for verification that the transmission fluid level was checked and documented in the system. Like I said from the start, this was the reason I brought it in. It’s a CYA for everyone really. He looks me dead in the eyes and says, oh, the transmission needs to really cold to check that. For that service we ask that the customers leave their vehicles overnight so we can check first thing in the morning. Without breaking the stare I say, it’s been here since 7:50am. He turns to the computer, starts typing and says oh, looks like it was checked. Anything else I can do for you?

I left after that and apparently, when the new T-SB comes out… I can burn another day at the dealership trying to get it installed.

So… any good news? Supposedly the transmission fluid was checked and I have that documented. Yay me… and there’s a new T-SB but you can’t have it performed yet.

Sorry, needed to vent… if you made it all the way down here, thanks for reading!

Here’s some quick side-by-side pictures to show the changes.

    * Rev 1 now includes a fourth description for “shift feeling concerns”

    · Busy shift like hunting gear behavior when driving on highway speed/slight grade

That was my exact experience yesterday as well, posted to the sticky on tsb.

Hopefully it won't take long for Toyota to get the new revision out.

I am actually pretty excited about this. I have been hammering my dealership about my 17 Limited downshifting to climb hills and never upshifting once back on level ground. I may call them today and ask about the revised TSB.

I dont seem to have any trouble since I had my TSB performed. Now I am wondering if it would be wise to do the new TSB when it is available.

Spoke to my dealer today and they were aware of the "Rev1" TSB but didn't know when it would be available. The Toyota Regional Service "guy" was supposed to get my truck next Tuesday but we have decided to wait on this TSB.

Well I had mine in today for 5000 mile. I ask the dealer to check to see if I had the lastest trans update and check transmission oil level. I also ask them to confirm the diff howling sound. After three hours of being serviced they came back and told me they installed the TSB He said it was the lastest version. He told me my transmission level was OK They told me they could hear a slight howling sound and said many people have brought their trucks in and they are telling them there is not much they can do until Toyota comes up with a fix. Well I sort of knew this and I did not expect them to replace the howling diff at this point because the sound from the diff is very low and it does not happen all the time. Furthermore I understand that people who had their differentials replace it did not resolve the problem

Before I brought it in I did not have any delay or shifting problems. The truck did seem like it was grossly under powered between 10 to 40 mph in D. However after the TSB the truck drives much better. It has a lot more acceleration in D between 10 to 40 mph. One thing that did bother me was when I ask the mechanic what did he find when he check the trans fluid he told me it was fine. I ask him how many quarts of trans fluid is required is required for these transmissions. He told me only 2 quarts are required. Is that true? Anyway I had them document every thing they did especially the diff howling sound

i will continue to wait on Toyota to come out with a fix for the howling diff.

TSB is released to correct a problem specific to the TSB. It's not an automatic fix like a recall where everyone gets the fix, only those exhibiting the symptoms specific to the TSB.

If you're not having problems why do you need to have the new TSB performed? What are you looking to correct?

I believe capacity is about 12..... but I don't know the difference between drip and no drip on inspection.

Understand though that if you get fluid added at a dealership they are going to charge you by the quart so if you're low and they fill you up with a quart and an additional tablespoon, you're likely getting charged for two quarts.
