I live north of Seattle by about 30 minutes and have two kids in elementary school, K and 3rd. Their lunches are really good plus they have tons of choices. I haven't been to lunch with them but my wife goes quite a bit and is always impressed with how good the food is. Lots of fresh vegetables that the kids like to eat, fresh fruit, salad bar, several hot items etc.

If my city's school lunches looked like that I would be making lunch every day. That's ridiculous.

It's terrible at my daughters school. Always had been. Shes packed her lunch daily and refuses to eat school lunch. Different districts, different budgets. I went to a different district. My lunch all 12 years was great.

I remember the turkey and gravy meals in elementary was one of my all time favorite foods to eat. Hell I should swing by and see if they still serve that up.

This was my son's menu for today.

    IMG_2848.jpg

He wanted to eat a hot lunch today. Guess what? They didn't have the chicken pot pie only a chicken fajita salad. No peas, no carrots. My son hates salad and won't eat it. So he came home hungry.

Guess the kids didn't have to worry about that today anyway. I got curious and asked him after all this how his pot pie was and he told me then they didn't have them. Then asked about the other stuff.

Did anyone else get those awesome Rib sandwiches like back in elementary school? Unlike that heinous abomination McDonalds sells.

Not sure why you're complaining... there's a dairy product (cheese), a grain/wheat (bread), a fruit (ketchup), and a starch (fried tater tots), all in one meal. The chili not shown in the photo would provide the necessary protein and fiber the child needs to develop properly and have a healthy digestive system.

Federal guidelines don't require organic or wholesome. Just that certain food nutritional check boxes are met.

    (*heavy sarcasm*)

My middle school many years ago gave us choices each day. Cheese burger & fries, rectangular pizzas, taco salads, or huge salad bowls. Plus we could have chocolate shakes, Little Debbie snacks, etc. Same options every day. It was al le carte so we could order whatever we wanted!

San Diego Unified School District used to have great food in my opinion. The food got better once I got to Jr. High. Even though the fries were soggy I still thought they were good. But after the healthy lunch law was passed the food is bland. I work at a high school and will occasionally buy lunch here. There's hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken bowls, spaghetti, and more that I haven't tried yet. The ones I tried are all bland and lack flavor. We have Frito Lay chips but they are 50% reduced fat and they taste different than their regular counterparts. The milk is still supplied by Hollandia Dairy and their chocolate milk is bland too. I'll have to try the Hollandia Chocolate Milk from the supermarket to see if it's also bland. Kids on free or reduced lunch won't even finish their food. During summer school lunch was free to everyone but nobody would even get a free lunch and the lunch lady one day ended up giving me a lot of food since they have to throw it away at the end of the day.

Here's a pic of my school's spaghetti. For students I think the meal will consist of milk, a main dish and for a side it'll be a lettuce cup or fruit of the day.
