I loved my old Pre-Taco truck, wish I'd restored it. Every time I see one on the street I glee with envy and regret :/
But Ironically, this 3rd Gen is twice the size and weight and gets 33% better mpg on the hwy.

So I take it that's a yes judging by the second?? J/K! lolo!
Congrats, it's a great truck for the price! n

I don't think the tech are dumb, but it takes a lot of experience to properly diagnose and repair a rear diff. Being new car techs, diff rarely if ever fail. Book knowledge and factory training are a must, but it takes actual hands on experience to complete the picture.
But most ppl take their failed diffs to outside shops, as they're most likely to fail well out of warranty.
I also believe that what most ppl not all, are hearing tire/road and wind noise as opposed to actual abnormal diff issues .
Edit: BTW...I have no diff howl I have an SR5 4WD DCLB with the front dam, which may or may not affect road wind noise underneath.

If you think the truck is over priced, you should do a side by side drive up comparison to all the other trucks out there now and sum up all the features and quality of all the parts inside, outside and power train. There's a reason why all the others give huge discounts on their trucks.
I know I have, as have others and it's why we chose the Taco.

I think all trucks and vehicles are over priced, but look at how many dangerous air bags they're forced to install by gov. regulations and other items that drive up prices just generate tax revenues. It's all out of control!

1 Qt every 1k miles is not bad, but 5k is better and more acceptable. That's one of the reasons they've increased the oil capacity with longer oil change intervals. I would want to try different oil brand 0W20 synthetic if I were you. It may not solve it in your case, but I have seen it take care of that in some rare cases.
Some premium entunes with nav have issues, it sucks. But all else being equal, it's an easy fix with aftermarket unit.

^^- Yeah, I'm 100% with you on that!
It's got me checking under the hood more often than I'm used to lol!
But the TW site is great, and it has some awesome helpful ppl here. And so are the mods & moderators. What's not to luv?

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

But you shouldn't have to replace it to have something work in a new vehicle

Yes I totally agree, I have the bad CPS sensor but what are my choices, get stuck on a Sunday evening on dark two lane hwy while Toyota waits for casualties and\or gov. to force a recall or look out for myself?
Nothing's perfect in this world, that's all I know for sure.

    Hope that helps

The CPS thing isn't ok either, have you replaced one on your own?

OMG, BT & DT.:cheers: I had a 95 (95.5) YJ like that forever. Thing could not get out of its own way but it was awesome in Moab. Count up all the mods that thing had, plus a dolly, plus two different diesel tow rigs? I could have probably had a nice 911 Turbo.

I got mine last December so it was an early batch. My CPS hasn't gone out yet. I haven't taken it out to see if it was one of the bad batches or not. I doubt I would buy the 3rd gen again. It's a good looking truck and all but after having it close to a year now and 21k miles later, it just doesn't get me all excited like it used too. My 2011 was more fun to drive but I'll be stepping up to a full size later.

Oh yeah. I bought it in 01/16 and not one issue. But I'm in no hurry to trade in
for a newer model year unless Toyota decides to stuff a 4.7L V8 under the hood.

A v8 in this truck would rock! And make an access cab with m/t option!
An OR access cab, that is.

Coming in from a 03 TDI with factory 10k recommended oil changes... um, it's a bit of a shock. Again, for a new vehicle.

It's just me, but brand new vehicles shouldn't be acting like vehicles a decade old and having maintenance issues already.

I someone else say the this same thing but its my opinion too. I love my new truck, but if I could get back my 2002 single cab Tacoma I would rather have that one. I traded mine and refuse to pay what they are selling for now.

I had a 2nd gen that I stupidly traded for a brand new 2015 Ram 1500 Hemi pretty much loaded. year later I traded the Ram for a 2017 Tacoma, nuff said. Awesome trucks. Are they perfect, no nothing is. Are the 2nd gen issues there, yup but atleast its a familiar evil that I know how to address. My old man is on his 3rd Tacoma, he leases a new one every 3 years and my brother is looking to get one also. Toyota makes a great truck that is handles whatever you through at it. I almost bought a Tundra but I dont tow and I like the size of the Taco.

Well I was able to trade my Taco on a 2016 RAM Sport 4x4. The rebates and discounts helped...a lot! Although, the RAM won't hold its resale value as much, I can tell after 2 weeks of ownership that resale won't matter because I'm really digging this truck! It's a keeper!!!

Cya on the highways and byways!!!!

Thanks for all the info too!!!
