Does anyone have any recommendations on bright LED reverse lights that are 1156? Or if anyone has a good looking alternative in the bumper I might be willing to do that too.

I wound't get bright reverse lights if i were you they could be illegal. all the reverse lights need to do is appear to people behind you indicating you are reversing. any lightbulb can do that. if you want light for viewing purposes, buy a separate light altogether and mount it under the bumper and put a custom switch in the cab.

get some reflective tape to put inside the housing aswell. the dull gray paint they used was pretty much all flaked off on mine. that alone will make a difference.

96 has 1156 for reverse backup bulb. Do not believe Amazon or Ebay advertisements regarding power (15W or 50W or 800lumens or 1200 lumens), all of that is just marketing BS. Good bulbs (I mean quality) are really about 5W and about 400 lumens. Sounds low - believe me it is still better than stock incandescent bulb and because of the 5000K or 6000K color they look much brighter than yellowish incandescent color. This is why people are easy fooled.

Saying that I have installed JMD Astar 1156 bulb that has 33-pieces of 2835 LEDs. JDM claims 800 lumens, which is BS as the bulb takes only 0.33A that is 4.4W and that is about 400 lumens. I know that they are not 800 lumens but still give good light output for backup. I bought them two and half years ago and they still work very well.

I don't think any reverse lights that I'm willing to buy will cause me to get a ticket. I could put two led pods in the bumper but I don't want to mount anything under it.

Thanks, I'm considering those or crees. They both are around $30 and I won't need to cut holes in my bumper for pods.

Yeah, who needs to see anything behind you when backing up...

Living in CA, I wouldn't doubt there's some stupid law like that on the books, but given the fact that my 2014 Carolla's backup lights are about 4x brighter than my '04 Taco's, I'll take my chances with being able to see behind me.

How hard is the install ? Even though not legal in California I would like them as backing up is hard with the damn foreigners around here who can't drive

California Vehicle Code § 24606, subd. (b) (emphasis added):

Backup lamps shall be so directed as to project a white light illuminating the highway to the rear of the vehicle for a distance not to exceed 75 feet. A backup lamp may project incidental red, amber, or white light through reflectors or lenses that are adjacent or close to, or a part of, the lamp assembly.

So I don't think LED is per se illegal, provided they do not exceed 75 feet. Granted, all LEDs may exceed 75 feet due to their brightness, YMMV

I love the way laws are written [poorly].

If my backup lights are illuminating the *highway*, I'd have to ask why I'm backing up on the highway... :)

I'll take my chances with brighter backup lights. We're not talking about 10,000 lumen off-roading lights facing backwards. I think someone would be generally appreciative of a light in their eyes vs. getting run over in a parking lot at night.

I knew this guy who had a full exo cage, rubicon ready, etc... 1st gen 4runner. He got tired of lowered hondas tailing him close enough he couldn't see their hood, so he put what effectively was a headlight on his rear axle, facing backwards. He called it a "backup light only used for off-roading" but he could flip it on at any time, like say, when being tailgated. That definitely illuminated more than 75 feet of the highway...
