What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

@SamGoingHam yesterday you had asked me about the bumper gap and steering affects of the 1" body lift.. I'll let the pics do the talking regarding the gap. The rear bumper is the only one affected by it... can't wait for my +1" high clearance rear!



Regarding the steering... after driving around last night and today on mostly empty country roads I can tell that there's a tiny bit more body roll, but that is to be expected. Only real difference is now I have to do closer to the speed limit through curves. No more rally truck

When you lift the cab you've got to loosen the steering shaft clamps through the drivers wheel well to allow the spline shafts to separate keeping the stock mechanical geometry.

Today I installed ditch light brackets. Waiting ever so patiently on a shipment from the Iggy LED group buy.


Then I washed her all up after seeing y'all post all those clean trucks yesterday Iol... I'd get closer but those trail stripes are getting out of hand. Gonna have to take care of that in the future.

 

Oh I know it. For the longest time I was stuck on the SR8 but the Bronze was my fist and only choice period, its perfect.
Then Vin had to come out with another wheel! SMH

I love the look of the RAY10, perfect mix of old school bullet hole but also more modern. I have read on here that the lips (fake beadlock) traps and holds water, like when your washing or its raining. Have you experienced this at all?

 

Here's some pics of the exhaust cross-over relocation. Not the neatest welds, but I'm happy with it. The crossover is now just under the trailing edge of my transfer case skid plate. Also, the interior drone associated with the TRD exhaust has been dramatically reduced. I read another post somewhere that claimed this benefit, and I can confirm. It really did quiet things down inside the cab. No idea how or why, but I'll take it. Sounds the same outside. I'm going to coat everything but the muffler from cats to outlet with POR-15 high temp coating and then add two 1-foot bolt-on heat shields where the driver's side pipe bends 90-degrees to go past and around the transfer case and actuator. I won't be driving more than a couple of miles until this is finished, but there's at least 3-4 inches between the pipe and actuator - and that't the part I'm most worried about.



Here's some before and after shots going from factory spec to the new 265/75/16s and the Wheeler's helper springs. It's settled a little since yesterday, but I still think it's to high, and certainly more that the advertised 1.5 inches. I'm going to wait to hear from Wheeler's and give it some time to settle more before making any changes. If it stays this high out back I think I'll just add the Baja-specific 1" front spring seat spacers from Toytec and another 1" rear brake line bracket spacer and call it done for awhile.

Finally, I power washed and coated the frame with Fluid Film for winter. My tip - if it's windy, do this BEFORE washing the truck.

 

255/85/16. It's the cell phone camera being close to the bumper and farther from the tires that skews the perception. They're tall skinnies but not THAT skinny.

 

Yeah, that happened to my SR8s. The water/mud puddles up in the bottom and when it dries just leaves a spot. Nothing super serious though and I didn't notice unless looking for it.

 

Quick rotor question, if they are warped will they shake the steering wheel EVERYTIME or intermitently?

Your rotors are not warped, they have brake deposits on them.

My shaking is worse when the brakes are warm, and hardly noticeable at slow speeds.

 

Extreme warping could cause vibrations all the time. Slight warping would cause with just the brake applied. If it's intermitten and you suspect warping, speed could play a factor

 

Shits been shaking for 23k miles but sometimes nothing. Sometimes my steering wheel shakes an inch back and forth.

 

I've had vibrations from warped rotors before. Not in my Tacoma but in my 92 blazer I had once upon a time. Never felt in the steering wheel just down by the wheels themselves though

 

I mentioned the shaking to 2 different dealers 10k miles apart and they both said warped rotors which wasnt covered by warranty. If i change my rotors and it shakes still im going to be pissed and yell. Which is why i wanna ask around first

 

My s10 started vibing alot at about 145k miles on factory rotors. And i drove like an asshole teenager . These have been vibing since about 20k miles.

 

Vibrations when braking or not braking?

 

When braking but every now and again when i first start driving i feel the wheel shake a little. And i just had the tars balaced.

Here are some pics of how I mounted the 20" single row behind the grill. Used the tall brackets that came with the lights and it sits slightly higher than I expected, which is a good thing. Almost none of the LEDs are blocked now. I used 1" x 1/4" (cut to 34.5") aluminum bar stock and some M6-100 stainless hardware, except in the middle. I didn't realize the middle support is 3/4" lower. Luckily I had a longer bolt and a spacer already on hand. The pics should tell the rest of the story, it's super solid and I'm pretty dang happy with the results. Also, just for good measure I used some rubber washers where the bar attaches on the ends since the surface isn't perfectly flat.

 

I'll be curious to know how this works out for you. I have a similar braking symptoms in my truck and it would seem a bit odd to have that be warped rotors in the first 30K. I won't rule it out, it would just be a bit disappointing.

 

It's your rotors. Same issue with my last Tacoma. I replaced both rotors and problem went away. I was going nuts with the vibrations! Pretty simple repair if you're mechanically inclined.
