Because nobody ever has unexpected events after kids are born. Kids should be able to get decent lunch options at school.

I don't disagree. But the ultimate responsibility is with the parents.

If you mean forcing change of the district that is feeding kids this shit, yes. I agree. After all the parent pay the taxes that pay the teachers and the meal planners.

No. I mean it's my responsibility to feed my children how I want them fed. The school is responsible to educate them.

I agree with this, but on the side of the families who can't afford every meal it would be nice to have assurance that while at school the kids get a good meal. the school doesn't have only the responsibility of education they have the responsibility of protecting and taking care of the kids too. I would just like to know my future kids are better taken care of than by a group who would feed them food worse than a prison.

I ate stuff like that over 30 years ago. It looks the same actually. I was in LAUSD lunch programs. I'm still fairly "healthy".

Totally agree in principle. But piss poor is piss poor and the parents have the right to expect and demand better for their dollar. The problem is too many parents let mediocrity rule and that's a slippery slope.

I agree with this in the case of the parents, but it isn't the kids fault. Nobody chooses their parents, nobody exists on purpose. This problem is only getting worse too as a percentage. People who can afford kids aren't having them.

More injurious is the opposite but you're correct.

One reason I'm not a parent is it feels like I'm subsidizing people who choose to be baby machines and feel they don't want to work. At 42 I'm in a stable enough place that it might be an option financially but not in the scheme of life due to age.

I work with these kids in the ghettos of Long Beach 5 days a week and have for 8 years. I notice that a lot of misinformation is presented to them in the program and the schools that I work for. They aren't allowed to bring "unhealthy" snacks like chips and candy, so that they can have room for "healthy" snacks like milk (often chocolate) and cereal or carbo-cookie-crackers. The amount of sugar in these snacks and the lack of nutrition in them makes them no better than the chips that the kids would normally eat.

Just like prisons huge contracts are given out for the food that these kids eat and then the misinformation that they provide for nutritional edification just makes them about as low as you can get in my book. These kids often live with their grandparents and single parents that don't have any better knowledge of nutrition than their kids do or what's told to them by the powers that be - information is a scarce resource in these communities just like social capital. They didn't get to choose their life at this point. It burns me up to see educated people profiting off of these kids when reinforcing it with misinformation about what constitutes "healthy snacks."

Whenever I give the kids snacks from my own earnings I give them a range of foods from my own eating habits - fruits, vegetables, peanuts in the shell, and rice cakes along with the fun stuff like pizza and chips for parties. I give them novelties like seaweed and sugar snap peas to give them exposure to something new and to try to expand their horizons as well.

My kid is a diabetic and has been since he was two. We pack his lunch every day because we have to control (to the best of our ability) what he eats but still let him be a kid. He gets a sandwich, some sliced apples, carrots and a juice box (the healthy kind not sugary shit). It does him well and I've seen some of the "food" they serve kids and it makes my stomach turn.

Oh, and leave the politics out of it. You all know better.

As a High School student who eats school lunch I will say that some days lunch is actually pretty decent. Both in quality and in quantity. However my biggest complaint about Ms. Obama's restrictions is on most days lunch isn't that great and/or the quantity is very small. On days like this I would normally supplement my lunch with a snack out of the vending machine. How ever as of now no food can be sold within an hour of a meal i.e. Breakfast or lunch. Which in turn means the vending machines are turned off and any clubs selling food as fund raisers can't sell. My $.02

I think they are awesome most of the time. Good soups and chili. Subs everyday along with two entrees that are pretty good most times. Baked potato days are my favorite. A steal too at only $3.00 which includes a fruit, veggie and milk. That "grilled cheese" looks horrible though.

Dude. Back in my LEO days, the academy got it's lunch from the state prison across the street. Needless to say I never forgot to pack my own lunch.
