Guys, I'm kind of wanting to know about the average salary for a mechanic. I'm in the army atm for 15h, which is pnuedrualics on helicopters. My dad thinks I'll make triple digits once I get in the civilian world. Google says differently.

To my knowledge you'll need an A&P certification to work civilian. By triple digits do you refer to hourly rate? Maybe @Joe D will pipe in.

Yearly triple digits, and yes. Getting my A & P license after 6 months at my duty station.

Go be a mechanic for Southwest. They do pretty well for themselves, especially when they start moving up the ladder.

Love Southwest, just did a paper on Herb Kelleher and the corporate culture there. Seems to be a fantastic place to work.

It's a great place to work. I'm sure you discovered that Herb and Colleen are the only people allowed to smoke inside the buildings. Pretty odd when you run into them inside puffing away

I'm assuming you're there as well? DAL is quickly becoming my home away from home.

Southwest tops out at $53/hr. in 5 or 6 years. That might be the highest in the industry for commercial airlines. Delta and United are a little lower but comparable. You may have to start at a regional airline starting anywhere between $15 to $20 per hour depending on who is hiring and where you want to live/work. Experience is a big deal for the major airlines. Delta United and Southwest were hiring in ORD and MDW recently. UPS and FedEx are options too. I believe they pay even more. You will normally have to put in 5 to 6 years to top out on the pay scales. Like others have said an A&P is required and an FCC license would be nice too though not required for general wrenching.

You said pneudraulics - is that a combination of pneumatics and hydraulics or just an error?

Either way those are both airframe related, do you have powerplant experience? You can't get the A&P without the P.

I work the ramp for SWA, Hands down the best job in the world, with the worst schedule. Mechanics especially, since if your Line MX your working nights until you get high in seniority. im also pretty sure we have the best benefits package out of all the airlines. On a side note, specifically for the MX positions, to be hired on as a full mechanic right off the bat you need your A&P and 2500 Hours Minimum Heavy Jet, otherwise your going to start as an apprentice.

And as a CYA for the Social Media Department, the above is my personal opinion

I've gotta do my 6 yrs first, my dad thinks I'll be making big bucks...

Do you know what the hours are like?

Nope, still in training for pnuedrualics. Thinking of doing 3 years and switching to another mos to get more training

Night shift is 9pm to 7am where I work. You are almost guaranteed night shift where ever you choose to work. And work most holidays and weekends when you are new too.

My mom and some other family members work there. I'm still in college, but I am up there at HQ often enough that Colleen and Herb know who I am.

Just posted 2 new videos to my channel so don't forget to like, comment and subscribe :D haha.

I tried a different approach to editing the second one, you guys old enough to have kids probably won't like it :anonymous: I'm trying to find ways to keep non-pilots focused on what is otherwise boring flying footage.

Edit: I wonder how long it takes for my thumbnails to update when the video is embedded...
