Ideas for the 2x8 indentions in the bed

Has anyone made use of the little indentions in the bed designed for bridging with 2x material? I'm planning a camping trim this month and am planning to build a platform utilizing the indentions. This should give me a small area below to slide tents, sleeping bags, etc. while allowing me to store larger items like my ice chests above.

Would be interested in seeing other peoples ideas for this area if you've got pics...

 

I think most people just go with crossbars and cargo baskets for multi level loading.

 

While that IS my eventual intention...I'm still paying the note, and expecting a child soon, so money is my obstacle at the moment. They're there...why not use em. Figured someone has in the past, but didn't find anything in the search.

 

It should be as easy as getting some lumber and some plywood to go over it.

 

Outdoor carpet and a stapler and you have decent looking platform.

 

Just remember that board won't keep water from getting into the bed. Put the stuff you stow below in waterproof containers (trash bags, or plastic totes).

I think it's a fine idea.
