Find yourself a TRD OR 4x4 in an access cab configuration with a manual and you're sitting on a gold mine.

OK, so you have a TRD OR 4x4 That cost close to 40K and I have an SR5 DCSB V6 w/tow, appearance package, etc. and paid $31K (OTD). So we both keep the vehicles for 3 years and put 50K on the clock. We both keep them in good shape-ie.-no dings, clean interior, no abusive driving (off-road, etc.). So you are telling me you will get more as a percentage of your purchase price at the end of 3 years than I will? If we both lose 20% over the three years, I lose $6300 and you lose $8000. I had a '12 TRD Tundra DC w/4.6L V8 and was fully equipped (exception no leather interior). Drove it for 4 years and had just turned over 50k miles. Paid $31,500 (OTD) as the 4.6L's were not hot sellers especially in a loaded TRD. Loved the truck and the 4.6L served me well-plenty of power for my needs. But, I hit a mailbox and did $4K damage to the side (mirrors, rear over-fender, step rail, included). Toyota wanted $6K to fix the truck and lowest estimate was $4K (small "indy" shop). Sold it for $18,500 (cash) damaged. Add the $4K to the $18.5K and I would have gotten $22K+ for a truck that only cost me $31K+ had I not f***ed it up. I have a friend who bought a loaded '14 limited Tundra and paid well north of $50K. Think he will only lose $9K in 4 years?

This thread is funny because nearly everyone is just saying that whatever they bought will be the one that everyone wants in a few years time.

That's what YOU want. That's not the same thing. :)

The fact is these trucks do historically hold their value very well. Take that as a great bonus and just pick out the trim level/package that fits your wants/needs best.

all but the SR series will retain between 67-71(2)% resale value from 3-5yrs.

best way to tell, go look at lease residuals to get an idea of what Toyota thinks the truck is worth at the end of your lease.

This. Either get what you want, or be more scientific with data (I.e. don't rely on hearsay from an internet forum ). Toyota has an army of analysts forecasting resale value, and that shows up as lease residuals. Price out various option package configs, then get the lease residual values from the dealer. This tells you the expected depreciation over the lease term.

When I did this in 2010 with Toyota's online lease calculator, I found the base models held their value the best, percentage-wise. SR5's residual value after 3 years was nearly the same as the TRDs. More interestingly, genuine accessories installed at time of purchase did not increase residual value at all.

Up here its DCLB 4X4 or hit the road jack.

4X2 and 4 cylinders sit for a decent amount of time on the lots around here cause there isnt much of a demand

It's such a silly thing to even worry about. It's not like you're buying a super-rare Ferrari and sealing it up in a bubble for 40 years. It's a truck. Get what you want/need/like. You're going to drive it through rain, snow, hail, dirt, mud and sand, brush it up against shrubs, your friends are going to put beers and toolboxes on the hood, you're going to throw all kinds of disgusting and abrasive things in the bed. You're going to mod it; somewhere along the line you're probably going to you're going to tear out the factory speakers or head unit. You're going to spend money on tires you don't really need before your current ones are really worn out. You might lift it. You're going to pull shit, push shit, kick up gravel, eat in it, spill soda in it, maybe vomit in it, your dog is going to shed like hell in it, and you're both going to track mud in it. Any yes, you're going to try to keep it clean and nice. You'll wash it. Wax it. Try to park it away from other cars and out of the sun whenever possible. But still, between now and 5 or 10 or 20 years when you go to sell it, there's a world of things out there (besides what's mentioned above) that are going effect the value just as much as weather it has a sunroof or a manual transmission.

It might to get door dings.
It might get backed into something.
The sun might fade the plastic trim.
    Someone might key it.
You might scratch it with the lawnmower or a bike in your garage
    A seat might get torn
    The rims might get curbed
    Your girlfriend might kick it
A stone may crack the windshield
    The plastic headlights may fog
    A meteorite might hit it

You never know. You're going to worry about all of the above for 10 years while NOT having the exact truck you want today???

The configurations with the highest lease residual from Toyota Financial are the TRD OR 4x4 DCSB 6MT and the 4x2 DCSB AT (work truck); they have 75% lease residuals for 3 yrs/36k miles.

TFS has all the data and determined those configurations depreciate the slowest.

Is there a specific site you found this on? Just sold my Tacoma, looking into getting a new one and deciding on the DCSB TRD OR 6MT 4x4 or SR AC 5MT 4x4.

Based off leases residuals, the expert accountants at toyota say the trd off road 4x4 with manual transmission is the highest after 3 years at 75%.

Everything everyone else said in this thread is speculation. I just answered you.

Thanks very much guys for the non-speculative cold hard fact answer :)

I'm going to be purchasing a DCSB TRD OR 6MT 4x4 sometime soon. Debating till the holidays and after election. Definitely could have an effect on purchase price.

    This!

TRDORDCLB4x4 w/ Premium Tech Package may account for 2-3% of that. 'Unicorn' status right there.

The cheapest model 4x4 with automatic and a brand new pair of TRD 4X4 stickers will get the job done.

I work for a leasing company, and here are my 2 cents worth. There isn't a vehicle currently in production, that holds it value better than a Tacoma, so you are good with just about any configuration. Don't go buying a bunch of options you don't care about, just for resale. Don't add items that don't make a difference to many people later. For example, the $3000 package that comes with crash avoidance, park assist, etc. Those are nice, but aren't a deal breaker on used especially. Same goes for tonneau covers, camper shells, and lift kits. There isn't a bigger waster of money than accessories, when it comes to resale value. Those should be considered money tossed out the window, and only for your enjoyment. If you can get nav stand alone. it's a good option, but you have to get a bunch of options to get it, making it a looser. The 4x4 option, will increase the value as much as the cost, possibly a little more. If you don't want or need 4x4, I wouldn't get it just for the resale value, and pay interest on it. My personal thoughts are go with a basic SR5, or a Sport, if getting a 2wd. People like the fake hood scoop, so the sport is a good option. Don't buy the Off Road 2x4, go sport instead. If you get a 4x4, any package will do just about as will as the others, except the SR package. Stay away from that. Don't be afraid of a manual Off Road 4x4 or TRD Pro if that's what you want. Most people want an automatic, but the people that want a stick, REALLY want a stick. It saves you some money, and the resale value is about the same as an automatic, if not more. Wouldn't get manual in a 2x4 though. Definitely go double cab. Not much more $$ than access, and way more desirable. Hope this helps

That's interesting....I test drove this exact truck 2 months ago and it's still sitting on the lot. Access cabs don't seem to sell well.

95% of people that buy access cab's buy them to save some cash. Most people want the Double cab. An access cab buyer will likely move up to a double cab, but it will be hard to find someone that wants a double cab, drop down to an access cab, except for a LOW PRICE. The exception, is the Off Road 4x4 Access cab, but there is no way I'd get an access cab if I'm concerned about resale value. There are a lot of access cab owners on here, but this is an enthusiast site. In the real world, hardly anyone has a access cab as their first choice.
