Has anyone ever attempted/succeeded at modding the "S-mode" to make it a gear selector versus a gear limiter? Like right now S5 makes the truck use gears 1 through 5 as needed, but can it be modded to make S5 mean the truck is in 5th gear until the driver inputs it to S4 or S6? I feel like this wouldnt be that hard from a software stand point, but who am i?

Just interested if anyone has ever even attempted this...

Trade it in for a manual transmission.

Yeah i saw that coming.....i would have gotten a manual if it wasnt a 6 month wait at the time i bought mine. I kinda figured this could just be a software thing

It could be as simple as software, but toyota engineers would have to build it for this particular set up. Its not something you can just change in Techstream.
Some manufacturers have been producing shiftable automatics for a few years now, so the technology is there, its just up to toyota to allow it.

no, a manual valve body turns it into a manual valve body.

I wouldn't even think about modifying it if I were you. It's not a clutched auto like the dsg transmissions. It will never be like a full manual and will always have delayed shifts. Also these trucks seem to have a lot of transmission bugs and issues so modifying it would just throw your warranty and chances of them ever fixing your transmission down the road.

I know I wish I never got the auto just for the fact of the tsb on it and the fact it constantly hunts for gears to the point it's not enjoyable to drive.

There are SO many automatics with torque converters (aka non-dsg) that have slap shift style shifting option. You wouldn't use it all the time but it would definitely be nice some times. I wouldn't want paddle shifters on the steering wheel but the +\- selector on the shifter would be perfect. Gear limitor is pointless to me.

Yeah i guess I am with @flynnr here. The limiter doesnt really have a use for me, but making the truck stay in 6th (tiny incline) or 5th (small hill) when climbing instead of downshifting all the way to 4th to maintain the EXACT speed set for cruise. Truth be told, I would never be the first to do the mod because I have no knowledge of it, but I would love to see it done.
