Is it an insert that can be pulled out to accommodate larger cups/bottles, like the 2nd gen?

Welcome to TW. I have a 2016, and my cup holders fit large Tervis cups. Don't know why yours don't fit.

Word of advice; if your first post is to complain about the cup holders, expect a majority of the site to consider you a troll.

In fact, I'm starting to suspect that you're a troll because you used a stock image instead of taking one of your own. Do you even have a 2017? How do we know you're not some Russian hacker trying to defame Toyota in some weird and vague propaganda campaign?

Evidence of non-Russian actual Tacoma ownership, please.

Seriously... of all the little things that could bug me about my '17, it's the stupid cup holder. The diagonal diameter is big enough for normal sized water bottles, but the edges are squared off, so it doesn't fit.
From the driver's seat, there are something like 7 accessible cup holders, and not one is big enough for a Nalgene, or anything larger than a Starbucks cup. Makes sense in a Camry or something, but this is a truck.

And as we know all third gen owners have prostrate issues and need to drink lots of water. Why they didn't include an option for a roof mounted camel back makes no sense.

    I kid. Sorta.

My 2001 has 4 cup holders in between the driver and passenger. But back t hen trucks were trucks.

These days most people who own trucks do go to Starbucks.
