    Hey there.

Looking to buy a used 2008 2.7L AT with about 140K miles. Are these durable as the V6 verrsion? I have owned a 2012 V6 double cab before. Now I just need a truck for rare Home Depot occasion and tow my single jetski.

    Thanks for reading.

More durable than the 4.0 V6 and capable of a longer lifespan.

Thanks. The guy told me the title is under his company's name (which he owns). He is willing to go to AAA to do the transfer. He told me the company doesn't keep truck past a certain age. I have buy and sold many cars but never in a situation where the title is under the company's name. Shouldn't be any different? Should I ask him to show proof of the company's ownership (if we don't go to AAA)?

That all being said neither the V6 or the I4 in the 2nd gen Tacoma were know for premature failure.

However the condition of the engine will have more to do with how it was taken care of over how it was designed at that age. If it's a fleet truck I'd be a bit weary. Sometimes they are maintained awesome but my own personal fleet experience has been mixed, especially if the driver was responsible for getting the maintenance done rather than an operations manager.

Pretty sure I've seen a document somewhere with projected lifespans and the 2TR-FE was far ahead..

Could be making it up I suppose.

    I'm just bugging you.

Honestly the OP should ask for maintenence records and go off those. While they can be forged it will give him more peace of mind than asking around on the interwebz. If the records show long OCIs or missing maintenence records then he'll at least know it's a risk.

Maintenance the same between the two, I personally would expect a 2.7 to last longer than a 4.0. However, I would not expect an abused 2.7 to last longer than a well maintained 4.0.

Edit: I would do a little more due diligence than usual on this one. His explanations and willingness to go through AAA (for what purpose?) seem a little weird to me. Very possibly nothing but that just seems a touch too far to me.

Off topic.. how's the 3.5L in terms of longevity/reliability? First introduced in 2004, right?

Damn dude, at least let the OP get a full page or two of solid advice before deliberately derailing his thread, lol.

    Maintenance records would be great!
    But Rare.
I would not buy a vehicle without test drive. .
My test rides are strait to dealer (or trusted mechanic) for 100something point inspection. Cost $30-50 and helps if they sell same type vehicles because then they really nit-pick Each flaw.
Then I drive back to seller with a list prices and "problems" to either have seller fix or to deduct from initial negotiated price.:burp:
In maine actual car sales people have to list known problems once they "know" so at that point they'd rather sell. :ballchain:

They play games.. so can we:brianr::rofl:.

Go to AAA? I don't even know what that means. Do they serve as a contractor to the state or something? Why would 'going there' matter to the process?

A title is a title. Should be no reason for a problem to go from a commercial entity to a private one. People buy former rental cars every day.

Do you mean asking him for proof he has authority as a representative (owner) of the company to sell the corporately titled vehicle? The registry should be asking that for you.

2.7 or 4.0 engine longevity has nothing to do with the engine, but everything to do with who owns it and how they treat/maintain the vehicle.

Environment may also come into play.

Toyota motors have good longevity. The issue here is not if the 2.7 lasts as long, its if the 2.7 was maintained well. Get an inspection done. Pulling a single jet ski would be a cake walk for the 2.7. No worries there.

Buying anything with high miles is always a gamble. But if you use good judgement, it is sometimes easy to tell if a truck was well maintained. All things considered, the 2.7 should have plenty of life left, I would think.

I had a 2008 2.7. In the 60k miles that I owned it, the only issue I had was a squeaky serp belt. If it has been well maintained, not abused, and the price is right, I'd say go for it.

The 2.7 is a beast and will last a long time. I've seen a lot of high-mileage 4.0's on here too. Usually the X factor is the transmission. Autos tend to have a shorter lifespan than the manuals.

My 2005 has ~75k miles on it and all I've needed to do is basic fluids, one set of spark plugs, and a serpentine belt. Even then, the belt was just squeaky, it didn't fail or anything.
