This the 3rd time my rear differential fail.

    1st howling
    2nd leaking seal
    3rd howling/grinding

Toyota will not replace my diff because they said is normal characteristics of the truck. Fuck you toyota.

posting a video doing this won't help having them replace it.
They could say this caused it now lol.

Damn that messed up. Same thing happened to my dad with his 07 trd off road when it had less than 20k and then it happened again at 80k same humming noise that you had.

It's hard to believe that three diffs are all bad from the factory.Something else must be causing them to fail.

Just a heads up, be careful running something up to speed with no load on the tires. Speed rating on tires is under load. Without load, they can come apart. Seen it happen.

Like maybe jacking the truck up in the air and running it up to 60 mph repeatedly with no load on the axle? Just a thought.

OP, no one is being a dick here... folks are just saying be careful what you film and post. Call Toyota and open a case. Demand that the fucktards in the service dept call in the regional guy to assess. They will get you taken care of. There is no way that they can ignore the noise your truck is making and call it normal characteristics. You're just dealing with a very bad service advisor/manager. My $.02

I think the second one was the only bad diff. my truck howls, most do and they haven't actually failed. Even my dad's 2011 tundra howls at simular speed with 40k and we pull a large boat frequently with it. Also with no weight on rear axle when on a lift, it will make a lot of noise, it's normal to sound kind of like grinding while doing it since there is no resistance pushing the gears tight and can knock around a bit. You have to really know what you're listening to. I think you bought into the diff noise = diff failure of the other thread. run it, if it blows then it was bad, but a humming noise could actually be normal or not the diff at all. calm down, take a breath, and trust toyota until proven otherwise and not some trolls on TW. your under warranty for now, if there is a problem it will be covered. the oil leak was no good though.

I drive a variety of full size trucks for work. All of them have some sound coming from the diff. Usually when decelling.

I'm not really sure why all the hooplah. It's not like they're all failing.

Exactly. I keep seeing people freak out about this but only a very very small amount of people have them fail, yet nearly all of them make the howl. can't wait until people stop making this a major issue when it hasn't been yet.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion on this. I get that and respect it.

My differential howls. It was replaced with one that howls even more than the first. I'm not worried about it failing but that doesn't mean that I'm just generally OK with the sound. I'm sure that with some trucks it's louder than others. Mine is really loud. It's embarrassing when I have passengers.

I just keep coming back to the fact that my 1st gen Tacoma didn't howl and I had almost 300k miles on it when I sold it. My 4th generation 4Runner doesn't howl and it has 150k miles on it. I just don't see why I should accept the fact that my 3rd generation Tacoma with only 8000 miles on it is so loud.

Like I said, it's just embarrassing.

I guess if it's super loud then could be wrong about it. mine isn't very loud and neither is my father's
