Powdercoat Teflon Wheels?

I'm torn between whether or not I like the dark grey color of my ATX Chambers. I painted the hub and lip of my wheels flat black this weekend and it looks pretty good. However, I think painting the entire wheel black would look a lot better.

Would powdercoating take directly to the teflon finish without any sanding? I'd hate to compromise the teflon coating.

 

:: COVERING the teflon with powdercoat is compromising it. You spent the money to get the teflon....painting over it is kinda silly imho.

 

I don't disagree with you as I'm not sure but how, exactly, would painting over the teflon be compromising it?

My thinking was that the teflon coating would be a good bonding base coat for the powdercoat.

This is totally for aesthetic purposes only as I'd only consider powdercoating it if it didn't compromise the teflon's protective qualities (i.e. no sanding required, etc.).

 

Because the Teflon coating doesn't magically seep thru the powdercoat. The Teflon makes the wheels easier to clean and maintain. Put a layer of powdercoat over it makes it useless and it will make it almost impossible to return it to it's useful state.

 

I should have been a little more clear. When I say protective qualities, I'm referring to resistance to wear and tear. Ease of cleaning wasn't one of the main reasons I bought these wheels although that is an added bonus. I understand that coating over the surface eliminates that feature.

So, would powdercoating over the teflon make it more wear resistant?

 

I like the wheel; I'd just like it better in black. Also, I'd get them powdercoated for free so cost isn't an issue.

 

Most powdercoaters would media blast the wheel before powdercoating so any sort of finish that is on the wheel would be eliminated.

 

That's the answer I was looking for; thanks. If they need to media blast the teflon surface first, then I might not consider it. My initial thinking was that the teflon would be a good base for the powdercoat and the end result would be a really wear-resistant wheel.

 

ok think about it this way......
Teflon is a coating on your wheel it is only about 2mm thick ..... the coating is what makes your rims grayish looking.........if you sanded them you would most definately compromise the teflon (think about sanding a teflon coated pan) ie it destoys the pans purpose......
also teflon keeps things from sticking like eggs etc.......therefore paint would not adhere well to teflon

 

Yeah, I understand teflon's qualities pretty well and what it's purposes are; I was wondering if powdercoating would take to it. I was under the impression that the process of powdercoating allows a dry powder to bond to surface via electrical static. So far, it sounds like it wouldn't take to teflon too well without sanding.

why didn't you just get the black ones?

 

I didn't know ATX Chambers came in black.

 

Mine are the same and they are more of a dark gray rather than a true black.

I'll admit, they did look a lot darker when I first got them:


However, once installed and out in the daylight, they look dark gray:


FWIW, the pic you posted of yours helped sway me in going with this wheel. They look really good on your truck.

1) The "wear resistance" property of the Teflon can't seep thru the powdercoat either. If you cover the teflon with powder coat- Yes-The teflon will last longer- but it's not going to make the wheel look better.

2) I shoulda been more clear too- The whole "non-stick" thing was aimed at the paint taking to the rim before baking.

Think you kind got screwed or didn't get good research about your rims- Cause I've heard the color thing before- Black in the box-Greyish on the truck.
