so I never relocated my tow plug and now have destroyed the mount and plug. I'm wondering what you guys suggest to replace the mounting bracket and plug ? Does anyone have any tips to make it easier and nicer so it won't happen again ?

Yes the item from Hopkins above makes it easy, there is screw posts to attach the wires, and a rubber boot to keep water out. Go to the link above and you will see what I mean. there is a OEM 2016 looking 7 round 4 flat available that may be plug and play , I would look for it but you may have to mount it vertically to fit it in the bumper.

IMG_8554.jpg I just made a bracket and relocated it, didn't want to cut a hole in my bumper.

I will take and post some pics tomorrow but mine is literally destroyed pretty much just wires dangling down and the bracket is all twisted and broke.

found a thread that tells let me look for it...

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trailer-plug-relocation.195296/#post-9183047

the hopkins should come with a diagram (edit added pic of diagram below, )that shows which pin is which, I would suggest attach wires and either use a multimeter (pain, using cheapo light up 2 pen style indicator easier )or I think most auto parts stores have a plug in gizmo they lend to tell if the wires are hooked up correctly, maybe call them first to save a trip , if it's right then attach them better.. unplug harness bring it inside, alot easier to work on , be careful it's easy to snap the little retaining hooks that hold the harness clip together (ask me how I know)

Checking is a pain, but look at it this way, if you don't have a trailer on hand you are definitely going to want to check the connections /make sure the hopkins unit isn't defective one way or another, BEFORE you need them.

I used ring terminals shrink wrap and solder ( definitely overkill)Figure do it once and forget about it

I need to do this. One of my favorite off road spots has a descent that always opens my hitch plug cover for me. Just a matter of time before it gets torn off. I got hit about a year ago and it wrecked the stock plug. I wired in another one and it was easy. Toyota only sold it with the complete harness and it was like $225. So between that and the bumper getting dented and plastics damaged I wound up getting like $1500 from the other guys insurance. Bought a used (and perfect) OE bumper on ebay for $175 shipped, plastics for like $50, and the new plug. Then I bought new wheels and tires. Win-win. Bumper was dented on the other side already too.
