Won't hurt it. I mean yeah if you did it every morning it would be bad, but don't worry about it.

Why don't most cars/trucks these days prevent this in the first place?

My 82 Mercedes would let you turn the key once to Start, then lock the ignition so you couldn't turn it to Start again. It forced you to turn the key all the way to the Off position before you could trying starting it again. I just think it's a simple mechanism that would/[has] prevent[ed] this issue altogether.

This is almost a weekly occurrence for me because I am damn-near deaf (and forgetful). I am sure I have done it hundreds of times without realizing it too. I haven't had to replace a starter or flywheel in either truck yet... yet.

After I reread this, I guess the "Push to Start" button would take care of the issue.....

......I haven't either. See post #23. Because of my Mercedes, I've always had the habit of turning the key off if it's been left in the ignition before trying to start it.

My family has owned 8 of those diesel Mercedes, so yes in a way. The habit of turning the key off, then on and waiting for the glow plugs to warm up before starting formed early for me. I still find myself every now and then "waiting for the plugs to warm up" in my Tacoma. :anonymous:

Also, I'm probably not as old as you think I am....

Nope. Not that I remember anyway. That being said, I am nearing 62 years old. Maybe they taught us better in the olden days?

I'm fairly certain I have tried it intentionally on my truck and the starter motor doesn't engage if the engine is running.

I don't think the starter circuit knows or cares that the engine is running.

Exactly the issue with me. I leave my vehicles running while I am buying cigarettes in the morning. The first thing I reach for when I enter my truck is my ignition, especially when I am tired (every morning haha). My '03 stalls out when I do it, my '14 remains running, but the RPM's drop until I catch myself. Don't do it, it can't possibly be good for your truck.
