Buy once, cry once.....pain in the ass to do a clean install. Took me 2 hrs to cut, measure and modify... I don't want to do it again........

 

looks nice! For hanging the mic I'm a fan of using the 3M command strips. Holds well, does not damage the dash, no need to drill holes.

Head unit is my next mod. Stupid thing is fading to the right, gets an occasional grounding problem until I smack it, does weird EQ shifts, power cycles when it's cold.

What's am I potentially gaining with an Icom versus brand "X" (besides a reduction in pocketbook)?

 

Pretty much.
Kidding. seriously, ICOM makes about the best electronics on the market, and they charge Ferrari prices but the product is pretty much bullet proof.
And remember I have the 750 all in mic unit which was a whopping $75.
So.....

 

Most of my experience is from yachts and ships, where ICOMis the diamond standard. Shit lasts for years. On the subs I've been on, anything not custom made is ICOM, which says a lot.
Furuno is right there in quality, but harder to find.

 

This is only a 2 meter radio and not a UHF/VHF. Most people use the VHF band anyways when they are mobile. I have a dual band hand held unit just for that purpose. I narrowed down to ICOM and Kenwood due to size, price, build quality and Milspec buttons. ICOM won due to the larger screen but not much. Mounting was also important. I wanted the radio to fit in the cubby. Most of the other brands the screen or heat sinks where too large or long. I want a low profile flush fit.

 

I'm a huge fan of Icom and motorola...everything is kind of shit......

 

Now you need an SSB, then your truck will look like a CIA intelligence gathering vehicle!

The next model up had a single side band option , but I figured I have no use for it.

With a good antenna!when I had a small mag whip, I could get more range with a note tied to a rock. Same rule with any set, better antenna, higher up = more range.

 

Exactly. I have mine on a relentless ditch light mount and it doest perform as well as if it was on the roof. I have parking garage issues so I can't move it to the roof. I'm running a tunable firestik
