Nitto, BFG, Toyo... Help with decision. (details inside)

So i'll be buying a new set of tires once I get my income tax return and i need help deciding what to buy. I've never owned a truck before, so obviously have no experience with off road tires at all. I'd really appreciate opinions on what I should get. Here's the skinny:

The Truck: 4dr sport prerunner (2wd).

Terrain/ Common use: I drive about 25K miles a year. I can easily say that about 24K are all street (If I had better tires, i'd attempt more and go on more trail runs with all you guys). It doesn't rain or snow much here in San Diego so wet pavement performance is not top priority. The times I do go off road, the terrain usually varies mostly dry desert trails, sand, and of course some areas rocky . Mud is not really my thing either, mostly because it doesn't rain much around here and I only have 2wd(LSD) and don't want to get stuck. I won't be doing any crawling, no Mud boggin or any of that.

Biggest concerns: (It's going to be a 265/70/17)
- Good in Sand and baja type terrain
- Doesn't kill gas mileage
- Good tread life/wear
- Somewhat aggressive look

I'm thinking about the Nitto terra grapplers for the above reasons but then I see the Nitto Trail grapplers and BFG KM2's and i just love them. Are there any mud terrain tires that are pretty good in sand?

 

BFG AT's

 

Km2 are noisy on the road, if you commute much especially on the freeway you will go insane with the noise. (trust me I had them and they drove me nuts) Lots of my friends have Nitto Terra Grapplers and they're quiet as hell and very minimal wear and tear according to your driving...

 

I don't really want a noisy tire but then again I do have a flowmaster on my truck so it's noisy anyway. I just really like to aggressive look of the mud terrain tires but i'm not sure the benefits I would get from a Mud terrain tire outweigh the benefits of sticking with an A/T tire (for my use)...

The only terrain (that i've been in) that has given me problems is sand... And i have cheapo street tires. With that said, what's the best tire for sand, dry desert trails and on road comfort...?

 

Honestly, you should stick with an AT. You'll regret going w/ bigger tread with the amount of highway driving you do. Worse MPG, and not as good of tread life.

I've loved both my BFG AT's as well as MT's. I have no experience with any other tire.

 

With that said.... What do you think is the best AT tire?

I've never used any other AT though, so i wouldn't consider myself an expert. the BFG's have never let me down, that's why I stick with em.

I've done research on this forum about BFG & Nitto AT's and I don't get a clear preference. If only someone had experience with both......... haha

 

It is all personal preference. Some will like one over another for a particular reason. It is probably hit or miss. Although not the best way to pick a tire, I chose mine based on looks. I like a more aggressive looking tire and I went with BFG.

 

I have the Terra Grapplers and they are fairly quiet on the highway, good tread for light off-roading, and look aggressive. I prefer them far above BFG's. Not a big fan of BFG's any tread pattern. I almost got the Toyo A/T's but most of my mileage is highway, and I tow occasionally. Pd $600.00 for mine stock size. Good luck.

 

I've got Toyo's right now and will be needing new tires before the end of the year. I've liked my toyo's, they've held up really well, about 40,000 on them right now and still plenty of life left, and they work well on street and gravel. Never tried them in sand so don't know if they'd work for you there, but everywhere else they've been great. Having said that, I think I'm leaning toward General Grabber AT2's next time around, partly because almost every review really likes them, and also based on their relatively low price. I feel like the BFG's are overpriced.

 

I am on my first set of Nitto and I like them. - feel good, quiet and not expensive.

I have had 3 set of BFG KOs - expensive, nothing exciting, over priced, don't plan to buy them again.

I have had 1 set of BFG KMs - noisy, wear fast, and did I say noisy.

I have had 1 set of BFG KM2s - IMO slightly louder than KOs, wear good on street, but 10 ply so they are rough road for a Tacoma.

BFGs need to be balanced all the time or they don't last 25,000 miles. They look dam good but I think they are better looking than they perform. Their performance does not match their cost.

 

all right man look check it out. I had the 35'' toyo mtz on my old truck rip. On this new truck it came with some 33'' bfg ats. I hate them with a passion. my 35 s never made as much noise as these. Plus the first set lasted me 3 years before i got new ones. And i put a lot of on and offroad miles to them. All my friends changed from their Nitto mtz to the Toyos. they are a lot quieter than them and last way longer than them to. My friends and I have to say Toyos all the way.

 

My KM2s (285/75/16) are quite as fuck on the road. I don't understand the "noise" issue people have with them. With my music on, I can't hear them at all...


They perform greatly, too.



They have 12,000 miles on them and still have 18/32 (started at 19/32, I believe) depth all around, rotated every 5,000 miles.


With my TRD CAI, I'm getting ~17-18mpg, so not a HUGE loss. I don't drive slow either.

I don't like the way Nittos look, but they seem to perform well. It's all about personal preference. I'm a BFG person.


I spent a lot of time off-road and I push my PreRunner pretty hard, but you're spending the majority of your time on the street, I'd say go with the BFG A/Ts.

 

I just removed my BFG A/Ts - hated them
Purchased Nitto Trail Grapplers (more than you need) - love them

If you dont need KM2s, Trail Grapplers, Mud Terrains...

Then the best AT in my opinion is the Nitto Terra Grappler.

 

bfg a/t's are a great tire if you do mostly street and mild trails. i recently switched to toyo mt's and love them tho. they are a little louder but look great!

love my KM2's and no road noise, wear amazing. Only downfall is price.

 

I just scanned the ages of most of the guys on this thread and I realized that I wore out my first set of BFG ATs before most of y'all were even born. They added the side bites and renamed them KOs but the tread pattern is over 30 years old.

Damn, I am old.

 

Thanks for the real world review... I'm considering the KM2's in a 265/75/16 for my '09 DC TRD OR 4x4...
