Progress is looking good on your rig!!

So I thought I'd provide an brief update: put the 3.5* shims in. Jack shaft and pinion angles are the "same" (within laying on your back under a truck accuracy). I have more vibes now than when they were 1* apart. I'm going to attribute this to axle wrap as most vibrations occur on takeoff. So, the 2.5* shims are going back in. I may entertain going to 2* shims if I can't live with what the 2.5's are providing.

Thanks for reporting back! I think I may crawl under tonight with headlamp, and measure. Since adding the bumper, gate, and spare, my take off shudder calmed down quite a bit. I can't feel any other unwanted vibes up to 75.

What angle finder are you using, and what method to measure pinion? Just curious. Thanks Jason. :)

I'm having trouble with the rear upper flare nuts that are attached to the frame bracket. I started using the flare nut wrench that you recommended (arrived today) but the nut "feels like" it was starting to round up the corners of the nut head. Not wanting to completely round off the nut, I stopped to take a deep breath, re-assess and re-evaluate and ask for advice.

I feel like the 10 mm Flare nut wrench seems a little loose around the nut. The 9 mm won't fit at all. It seems like if the wrench was 9.5 mm if would fit perfectly snug and not round off the nut. But I don't think a 9.5 mm wrench exists.

I believe my immediate next step would be to PB Blast the hell out of the flare nuts for the next few days and then try again.

Any input from the relatively sane Crom Club before I screw this up?

They are a PIA no matter how you do it. Some have went back along that hard line and replaced the whole thing... Others like my self have said screw Flare nut wrenches and used 2 pair of Vise grips. But the way the factory puts them on it too tight and is liable to strip the threads no matter what.

I used a flare nut wrench to replace my brake lines, but I did not skimp out on the flare nut wrench set I bought: SK Professional. Otherwise, judging from the difficulty I had even using quality tools I would have had to use two vise wrenches. Even then, using two vise wrenches may ultimately be easier.

I agree, the effort required to remove the brake lines from the factory is ridiculous.

    Happy I could help.

I started buying tools in both metric and SAE sizes whenever possible. Redundant perhaps, but I can't tell you how many times I've swapped between the two for a better fit.

That hardline up along the frame rail seems like a tough thing to replace. First I'll try the PB Blaster route and a 3/8" wrench.

Damn. I need this truck for a planned wheeling trip this weekend. I installed full leaf Dakars w/AAL this past weekend. If I don't replace the stock length brake lines, I have a feeling it might just get pulled out/stretched out when I dump the wheel into a hole and go full droop.

Ha! I'm using the iHandy Level free app on my phone. It has a plum bob feature you can calibrate to zero. I do a lot of double checks to make sure I get a good sampling of measurements. Not super scientific but it works. At the end of the day it's gonna be what it's gonna be no matter what the measurements are. I got mine close to equal and that's not the right answer for my set up so I'm gonna keep at it.

For what it's worth, I use Kroil at work when I have to break decades-old frozen nuts & bolts. Beats the shit out of PB Blaster in my experience.

You might also try pecking on the wrench with a hammer rather than turning it by hand. PB + flare nut wrench + pecking took my 15 year old lines loose very easily.
