    If you bought a Tacoma for fuel economy then you lose, these things are meant to run forever and take whatever you throw at it. Mpg is not in its DNA

    Ah but Toyota downsized the engine, implemented some crappy shift-happy transmission & software so that they could boast big EPA improvements for the third gen. Why wouldn't the consumer expect better?

    I dont think anyone here is expecting amazing mpg but, it would be nice if it got close to the estimated amounts. some people are getting 13-15 and thats significantly lower than the city estimate alone. You shouldnt average less than the lowest estimated range... just saying

    True... but as an educated buyer, I would look at previous history.

    Also taking into consideration it is still a midsized, V6, Toyota truck. The only vehicle MPG savy Toyota has going is a Prius in my opinion...

    Edit: This coming from a family of Toyota trucks and SUV's with known shit MPG

    I didn't expect a Prius, but for how gutless the truck feels down low, how quickly it wants to shift into the next gear, etc.... I figured I could live with it if I was getting 21 MPG+ combined. I'm averaging 18.9mpg per Fuelly and most of my daily commute is highway ~65mph -- 30 miles round trip. I guess ultimately not a big deal as far as MPGs. More disappointed with the shifting, lack of low end torque, the feeling I have to floor it to get it moving. It's like having to beat the shit out of your horse and digging spurs into its sides just to get it to gallop. Not really the way I want my truck to perform. I thought it would get better and more responsive with miles, but I think it actually got worse. The software update for trans helped a bit initially but overall I'm still disappointed. I'd rather get a combined 17 to 18 mpg (like I did in my 2003 Ranger with 4.0L) and have it feel like it has a pair. Our 2016 4Runner feels like a beast compared to my 2016 Tacoma on the low end of the power band. Every time I get in the 4Runner I have to be careful to feather the throttle; it is WAY more responsive off the line. My wife averages 18.5MPG combined in the Runner. Like I said I average about 18.9 in my 3rd gen. The driving experience (feel of power) is night and day.

    Never driven a 3rd gen, but wow... sounds like a huge disappointment! :sorry:

    Tried jumping a 3rd gen @ work today. Wouldn't fire but kept turning over. Brand new 2017 plates temp tags too!! TRD Sport White 4x4. Had to call toyota care to tow.
