Imminent Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) failure in 2016s?

That's why I added data to the thread. what the hell man, don't be a dick about it

 

Mine is a November 15 build date and checked, no hash marks. I will be replacing mine as I know how important something as simple as a cps is haveing owned a obs 7.3 powerstoke.

 

From another thread... my March 2016 Build date Tacoma has the old (non hash marked) part. No issues with it so far.

 

What are these "grid marks" you guys are talking about..?? Mine is one of the first in Canada... late sept/2015.. and is likely the early edition of CPS'ers. For the price, it might be wise to upgrade it myself, and save all that dealership crap, tow, motel, getting caught with the mistress, sending her home in a cab...etc, etc... driving a prius for 4 days.. EEUGHHHH.!

The part # and what these "grid marks" are would be appreciated.

Grid marks are in the 3 o'clock position on the part in the photo on the right above.

From all my friends that work for dealers, they all say its good if you get along with the service managers.
Otherwise they give you shit jobs all the time.

Dunno how it works there but here mechanics are paid piece work. eg one of my friends works for Pfaff porsche, they allow 4 hours for a full brake job but my friend can do them in 3, he gets paid the full 4 though. But he was saying if the service guys don't like you they'll only give you the long hard jobs that the dealer barely allows enough time for.

 

Received my CPS sensor today, it does have the hash marks. Will put it in soon when I get some free time.

 

Has anyone had continued problems after CPS failure? It has been more than two months since mine broke down. Since then it has been shifting poorly and sluggish at times. I took it to the dealer who told me the transmission fluid was low and the shift module needed to be updated. Even after those repairs were made it still continues to run poorly. The service manager says he has not had enough experience with the 2016s to know what is going on. Any ideas? I'm frustrated!

 

CPS failure appears to be a one time your done issue. I would however look into the camshaft position sensors (4) on the front of the engine, and I would look for any trace of an oil leak or any type of oil film residue. Look at the connectors and see if they are dry and tight, there should be no oil or trace there either, or on the back of engine.
I would also look for another dealer as this one appears to be intimidated by new technology.

Hopefully you never have it fail and need to change it on the side of the road.

 

A CPS failure can lead to damaged catalytic converters if you drove it in limp mode for any length of time. I'm not sure that matches your symptoms (not really), but something to consider. Otherwise, I haven't heard of any issues post CPS replacement. There's no adjustment on the CPS or anything else you can really mess up in a subtle way.

 

My catalytic converter was replaced the day after the CPS was replaced. The check engine light came on the moment I drove it off the lot. I didn't drive it in limp mode at all prior to that. It just died all of the sudden out of the blue. They said it was the CPS. They changed it out and it wasn't running right from the time I picked it up. Since l then I've had my catalytic converter replaced and then was told it was low transmission fluid along with the shift module issue. Before the day it died it ran perfectly!

 

Well that sucks. I hope you get some resolution.

 

Mine went out on the last leg of a lengthy road trip, added three days on to the trip. One note from the night before it happened: I started it and noticed that the 'check charging system' message was on the dash for a few seconds then it went away and ran fine until the following day so I didn't think much of it at the time.
Had 11,000 miles, died quick while pulling out onto a highway and waited 2 1/2 hours for a tow truck

 

I swapped mine out hopefully preventing a future failure in a remote place, took 10 min. I know people have posted the hash mark as the new part identifier, but there were a few other differences as well.


Here is the sensor location, passenger-side-fender-well, behind left rubber flap/splash-sheild. It has a rubber boot on the plug, pull off boot, push in clip on plug, then 10mm bolt.
