The original posters is not into demanding what he should get which is a new motor. If he is happy with the resolution provided then that is all that matters. I wish him the best of luck.

    going to be fun!
I would clearly have ground to stand on. this is liability for their GROSS NEGLIGENCE in forgetting to put oil in the engine. This is not an insurance issue it was a dealer fuck up and the dealer would need to make the issue whole OP did not buy a truck with a used engine he bought one in new factory condition with his history of the engine. He would deserve and NEW replacement engine!!

I guarantee I would have a NEW engine in my truck if this happened to me it is very difficult to quantify a USED engine that may or may not any possible damage. Without tearing the engine down.

So your saying that he would get used parts for an accident that's what I hear you saying.

I would absolutely be getting a new engine. The dealer nor anyone else knows what condition the used engine is in. Why is the engine with 9k miles already out of the original truck? Totaled out? Damaged during the wreck? Nope, sorry I'd be fighting that. Obviously it's not my truck and if OP is happy then good for him. Hell would freeze over before I let it go with my truck.

Checker lube near my house did this same thing to a 5 year old dodge Dakota and the lady got a BRAND NEW engine on the house. It is possible.

Not entirely true. "New Car Replacement" is indeed a coverage offered by insurance companies. IF the vehicle falls under a certain age/mileage, which the OP's vehicle seems to as it's a 2015 with only 15k on the clock.

A lot of you are forgetting one small detail... the truck was driven after seeing the oil light.
    According to the owners manual...
Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light: "Do not drive vehicle with the warning light on- even for a block. It may ruin the engine."
I'd say a 9,000 mile engine isn't too shabby considering...

If the light came on for any reason other than missing oil, I would say you have a point.

If your oil light comes on driving away from an oil change there's high correlation they are related.

    Huh?
Why else would a low engine oil light come on? It's telling you there's a problem. When you see that light you don't drive the truck... you get it towed. Just saying if the dealership wanted to be assholes they could say there's plenty of blame to be spread around. Granted, they forgot the oil but if the engine had been shut down the minute that light came on it might not have sustained that much damage.

Exactly. All the indicators come on initially so you can verify they are working and you don't have any burned out bulbs. The oil pressure stays on until there's pressure. So the scenario is either the trucks is pulled around running or you get in and start. Either way the light would indicate an issue or not. Of course assuming it was functioning and illuminated why the shop didn't notice is one thing before the question of what the OP did or didn't do is even asked.

    Not trying to be argumentative.

1/4 of a mile down the road is farther than a block, so damage could have already been done is all I was thinking.

That's why I don't let other folks touch my truck and so I do all the repairs myself except for when there's a Dealer recall.

Would this light not come on when it was started and driven back to the customer service area did the tech not notice? Did the Tech not check his work?

I could be wrong but it sounded like the warning light came on after the truck made a horrible sound and died... 1/4 mile away from the dealer.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
I would want a new engine or have some type of extended warranty in case the used engine bites the dust.

Think about this ... if the dealer somehow damaged the body of the truck and destroyed several body components ... would you allow the dealer to repair the damage with used parts ???

Toyota pushes using new and genuine Toyota parts to repair it's vehicles for customers. I have never been asked by a Toyota service department if I would accept a used part for a repair.

With all that said ... I would think the dealer only has to make the damaged individual whole again and back to their original position.

You can debate this both ways and both sides are correct in many ways.

Finding the history of the used engine seems to be pretty important in this situation, as mentioned previously it could be from an 07 and have been laying around all this time.

I agree with this..... I once had squirrels chew through my wiring harness under my hood in one spot. I took the 98 Tacoma to my dealer and asked them to repair. They told me they had to replace the whole harness at $1400. I about had a heart attack..... I said I don't want a new harness can't you just splice the wires back? They told me it was policy to replace with new and the service guy even chuckled and said this is not a mom and pop operation here.

So I took it to a mom and pop place and they spliced it back together for $130.
