Kind of new on this whole off roading thing and I have a couple questions. Please help this 4x4 newbie

    1) Should my truck make it up a sandy hill for example Blow Sand Hill in Ocotillo Wells with ease? Or is the differential locker needed for these types of hills and other hills at glamis.

    2) 4hi or 4lo

    3) put it in drive or "s"

    4) if I put it on "s" do I shift manually or just drop it in "s"

    5) what PSI? I read 10-15 but just wanna make sure.

I went this past weekend but I mostly rode my quad. I wanna go again this weekend but no quad this time. Please go easy on me! I hope I can do enough off roading on this without having to trade it in for an Trd off road down the road. Thanks in advance for any help.

Traded in the last one, going to start modifying this soon.
Hey, I haven't offroad my Tacoma yet (it's only been a week), but I've done Ocotillo, Death Valley sandwashes and dunes, ... in the Jeep :)

    For what it's worth:
It should make it up the dunes. I'm sure. The porky Jeep does freaking dump jumps for crying out loud. Just go easy on the gas.

    4-low (first)

That is a Tacoma specific thing so I don't know. I'd go 4-low first gear to oh third maybe.

10PSI sounds a little extreme. I ran 15-20 on sand and rocks (little higher sonetimes). Try it and see if the tires fall off, I guess

If it were my truck in deep sand it would be in low range, tires aired down, S Mode and ECT on, Traction control off and locker on.

You will have to leave Atrac on then. Tacomas 4X4 have been very capable trucks even without lockers and Offroad specific parts. Air down the tires, take a recovery strap and compressor with you and wheel with a buddy in another truck.

A trac is only on Off road for 3rd gen.

15-20psi, you'll have to play around to find what works good for you and how much load you have in the truck.
4lo in 2nd-3rd gear ECT on and traction control off. (hold traction control button for 5 seconds I believe to fully turn off)
maxx traxx and kinetic strap (know how to use kinetic/snatch strap properly)

When airing down and trying to find the right PSI go 2 PSI at a time for adjusting.

Crawl control has a 'sand' option. :D

But if I was in your situation, I would start with 4hi, take off the traction control and give it a momentum run.

Of course, I wouldn't try this by myself.

Crawl control doesn't. Multi terrain select does, which his sport doesn't have.

I wouldn't even go near sand with the stock firestone highway tires

This happened to me earlier this year,

I'm trying to figure out how you used the bottle jack without it sinking in the sand.

+1. If it's just pure sand/silt, you should be 'ok', but any kind of shell matter/gravel/etc at the surface or under will really lacerate the stock tread, possibly even cause a flat.

What's all this electronic whatchamacallits and whatzits y'all are talking about? Back in my days you just air down and use the skinny pedal and 4lo ...

    Stock and loving it
I did some fine sand a couple weeks ago. I was at 35psi and in 4hi. Just go do it. If you start digging in, just air down. It really doesn't matter because you certainly won't be wheeling alone.... right?

Your Sport has open differentials and week traction control. Your sport also has street tires which will work fine in sand when you air down.

If you ride a quad in the dunes, you should know how to drive a truck. Don't crest anything steep; don't nail the throttle when stopped; never park uphill
