I'm in IT, I shouldn't be using autocad......but, a customer sent us drawings for their new office and I know enough to open it up in DWG True view. Unfortunately it has 50,000 layers. How the hell do I hide things like ceiling grids, plumbing, and electric?

You have to go to the home button and to the layer state section and its a drop down menu and it should list all the layers there and there is a light bulb next to what you want to hide and you can freeze them also!

    Short answer: Don't even try.

Long answer: I deal with CAD messes like this every day. The problem is that there could easily be 50 different versions of the project in the same drawing file, with absolutely NO information to tell you which layers contain the FINAL version of the project. Throw in the fact that most people who create these CAD messes are complete and total slobs with no clue what they are doing, and the chances of getting screwed go way up.

It is possible that the drawing you received is clean, concise and accurate. But if it really does have a zillion layers, then it probably is a total mess.

Don't get hosed. Insist on a plain, un-layered PDF file of the drawing, that shows clearly and concisely what is to be built. Save a copy of the file on a secure server, with the "read-only" attribute set, and stored in a folder that identifies the source and the date/time you got it. That way, when the project is half-built and there is a discrepancy over what you bid on and what they THINK you bid on, you can pull out a copy of the original PDF that contains the project as quoted.

Bottom line: CYA at all times when it comes to CAD files. Trust me on this...

Thank you! Took a long time to hide what I didn't want, but I finally got it "cleaned" up enough to plot it scribble notes and markup for our technicians installing the network gear.

Oh, it's a total mess. Not only did they send me all 15 suites in the building, when my customer only has 2, but a million layers for different versions and stages of demolition. A nice clean PDF would have been sweet, but it took me 3 weeks to get what I have.

Also if you want to try freezing things that are just in the paperspace you can open the viewport or just use the model space and then type LAYFRZ and anything you click after that will freeze all components on that said layer. Its a quick way to freeze things if you dont know exactly what layer things are on but want them turned off.
