Is the '17 essentially a '16 w/ elect slider?

I guess it depends on how you look at it. The vibrating doesn't seem very widespread. The howling is but from the reports I've seen is toyota is looking at a fix and the diffs they have looked at do not have any mechanical damage.

I think Toyota does a great job at making wrongs right. That's part of their reliability reputation. The way I see it. You have a warranty. Let Toyota do it's thing. If it's not up to your standard by warranty end, then let that unbeatable resale value work for you.

Research is good, but take subjective opinions objectively.

I almost didn't buy one after hanging out here for a bit. Some have legitimate issues, but most don't. Many complain because they don't understand the truck or it's different than what they are used to.

6 months, 10,000 miles.... I would buy again. I'd got test drive and see if you see all the problems you are concerned with.

    Agreed.

Listen, as you correctly alluded earlier, there are many issues this new Gen has and that is a fact. It's a new vehicle and a first year run, going to have issues. Some critical, some just annoying. You'll have to weigh the facts/fiction and your level of acceptance/time and effort to diagnose/fix and dealing with the fucking dealer.

My personal view: I was looking at a Quicksand '16 TRD but I work from home, didn't need a $40k truck in the garage that I rarely drove. Sweet looking truck but more than I needed with 2 other vehicles. Once I bought my 04, I joined TW and frankly happy I didn't purchase the 3rd Gen.

NOT necessarily because of the issues (though mind boggling in the number of different problems); for me, dealing with the dealer is a dick-kicking experience. Time to diagnose, time to call the dealer, time to convince them to fix, time to research the TSBs, effort to convince them there is an issue, yada yada. Dealerships suck anyway; now add in the new vehicle issues: deal breaker for me. Life is too short to dick around with a brand new truck with issues. That is my personal opinion. Yours may be different and that's fine.

If I were you, I would reach out to some '16 owners on the forum that are experiencing the issues, determine build dates/locations and really try to choose a truck that meets your needs. There is some great info on here if you can sift through the BS you just called out above. Additionally, I would make a list of the TSBs on the Forum, follow discussions, talk to '16 owners on this Forum, find an educated dealer and salesperson (good luck) that understands these issues and find a truck that meets your needs.

I like the general look of the '16/'17 but I would do my research first and TW is a great place to mine for some excellent data. The problem is you encounter a few '16 owners here that simply state you are a troll if you mention any issue with the truck. Sensitive owners. Were it me, I would want to know what other owners are seeing/hearing/their dealers are acknowledging and what they are fixing.

I hope some of this rambling helps. Good luck in your decision.

I had a 16 SR5 with zero issues for 3000 miles then it got totaled Drunk driver hit it while parked. I now have a 17 TRD Sport only have about 250 miles on this one, so far zero issues. I have read this whole forum about problems and so far none have cropped up. No howling, no shift problems, not even a leaking sunroof. Keeping my fingers crossed. If I do I will post.

Same basic shit everybody else had 5 years ago.
I get what people are saying about staying off the internet. Use it to research before you buy but sometimes spending too much time in the forums after buying is like self diagnosing medical conditions on the net......usually the outcome is you think you are dying when it is nothing.

Yes there are a lot of confirmed issues but I bought a 2003 TRD OR 4x4 DC back in 2003. I waited for all the kinks to get worked out from the intro of the 1st gen DC in 2001, I thought. Within 1k miles we replaced the transmission, water pump, rotors, power steering pump, ball joints, steering column and numerous interior plastic pieces under warranty. Not to mention the dash rattle TSB all the electronics that made the rear locker work were never installed at the factory. That was fun watching Toyota try to explain that one. I just recently sold that truck with 167k on it and never did much else after 1k besides maintenance. Point is all vehicles can have problems.

Next example is I bought a 2016 WRX last November and did plenty of research, hence the 2016 vice 2015. After I bought it I got heavily into the Subaru forums and within a month I was convinced that thing was going to blow up and every time I drove it my heart would pound at the slightest tick or hesitation. Finally I deleted all those forums and drove the car up until 2 weeks ago when I traded it on a 2017 TRD OR and it was the most awesome year of driving, that car was fun and problem free.

So, to each his own, but I have decided i am going to spend less time worrying about this stuff and the possibility it "might" happen and just like my 2003, I will deal with it when or if it does.

The 2017 is still very new but coming from a 2003 and a turbo 4 cyl. Car it drives like a caddy.

You are seriously quoting click bait trash? I have 4000 miles on my Tacoma and love it. Don't pay attention to the few issues that some people have had with their 16. Forums attract people that have issues, not the 99.99% that have no issues. Google anything about any vehicle and you will find a group of people that have had a problem. These are mechanical vehicles with thousands of parts, made in Texas or Mexico, not Heaven.

My advice is quit reading clickbait and research with reputable sites like Edmunds owner reviews, consumer reports, etc.

I just read that list and it says terrible handling and poor braking. I've experienced neither. I love my truck (2016 TRD Sport 4x4). It's had some issues and thanks to this forum I've had them rectified at the dealer. I don't regret the purchase and it's the only one vehicle (in my 60 years) that I truly love driving.

2017 TRD Pro A/T owner here, have 350 miles on it, had the dealer check tranny level and TSB and all was good and up to date. I have had zero issues with the truck other than getting used to the shift points or the truck is smoothing out more as it breaks in.

I have a 2017 TRD Pro A/T and absolutely love it. This is my third Taco...from 2010 to 2017...over 100K miles...I've never had to put a wrench to any of them. Just gas, oil, tires and wipers. Reliable as ever. And I'm fairly picky...I can't stand problems, big or small. I just want my truck to run. My new truck (2017) is fantastic. Only has 250 miles, so things could change. But so far, I haven't noticed squeaks, whistles, bad noises, bad shifting, bad brakes...or bad anything. This is a great truck.

I'm not calling bullsh!t on anyone here. But I wonder if some of the negative comments aren't just trolls/haters? Not only does my truck run well, but the 2014 TRD Sport I just traded in held 82% of its value over three years. What other car/truck does that? Doesn't sound like a "truck to avoid" to me.

Who knows, maybe I'll have some of those issues with more miles? But as of right now...this truck is greatness. I'd buy it again. No question.

I wonder if people are happy with their truck, get on here and start noticing "issues" they didn't notice before and can't get it out of their head. I've worked in dealerships a long time, and many times when a customer had a problem, we would fix it, and they would start to pick the vehicle to death. I had a lady trade in a BMW for a V10 Expedition back in the day. She constantly complained about the squeaks and noises. It's a 3/4 truck. She traded it in for a diesel and she was happy. With the diesel, she just couldn't hear the noises anymore. They didn't just go away.

Have had my new 2017 TRD OR for a week, 500 miles on it, absolutely perfect, no vibration , howling or other issues. I read everything on this TW site first, actually was freaking a bit picking it up, expected issues, but none. I keep a truck along time, have had 4 full size GMC products in past, and got the 8 yr /100k warranty at time of sale for $1200. Paid 37 k out the door including everything, plates , 6% sales tax, etc. Absolutely love this truck, wow. So far so good, very happy

The only good thing about this thread is that it convinced me, without a shred of doubt, to increase the size of my ignore list. (Done!)

Random, but I was walking my dog the other day and saw a grey Ridgeline in a parking lot. This was the first time (that I can recall) I was able to properly check out a stationary one in person. You know those online videos where the description/title tells you that it's a damn train-wreck, someone will die, and while mentally you know you do not want to watch that shit, you just can't look away? That was me seeing the Ridgeline. I even did a full 360-degree walk-around in an attempt to find an angle from which it'll look alright. What a hideous failure of a design. Such a shame... Honda used to have taste.
