Enjoying the show Bob? I'm not sure if no updates means you're too busy because it's amazing, or if it means there's nothing worth updating us on?

yes alstrom point...got some great tracks from this trip, let me know when you head down there james...

lots of time on the road... 3 1/2 day journey there and 2 1/2 journey back...

from green river...the squeeze, molly's castle, muddy creek via wild horse canyon, north caineville mesa/upper cathedral, side route by the fremont, notom cutoff, notom-bullfrog, burr trail, wolverine loop with cutoff to petrified forest, boulder to escalante, smoky mountain to alstrom, alstrom to big water via remaining smoky mountain rd, big water to page to bitter springs to colorado city where i went south to pauite caves then toroweap, nampaweap site, mt trumbull wilderness then north to st george..side tracked through the beaver dam mountains before finally heading to vegas...

then vegas north to great basin national park and over to san rafael swell for some new trail exploration for the final leg home...

and a few days in vegas for SEMA in between

What kind of camera settings do you use to get the night time/low light pictures? Mine pictures always come out dark or grainy

depends on what you're shooting...that will dictate how low you can go on shutter speed

do you need a lot in focus or can you limit your depth of field? lower your f/stop the more light will be let in

iso should be as low as you can go given the above two settings...

for stars, iso2000, f/2.8, 30" is a good starting point

if things are brighter and moving, you have to speed up the shutter speed and crank up the iso...hopefully things are bright enough in that situation where you can keep your iso below 2000.

and manual focus if you can

How do you do your manual focus on star pictures? I always feel like everything will be out of focus

go to infinity and bump it back slightly, very slightly....

make sure you're using a remote or use the timer so you are not touching the camera when it goes off

as you increase the exposure past 30" on stars, you can start to notice trails..that's just the stars moving across the sky

If you look at the focus ring on your lens (depending upon which one you have of course, cheaper lenses have deleted this feature) it will show a scale showing the range of acceptable focus. I usually turn mine to infinity and then back it off a little bit. So long as you are trying to focus on the night sky only that has, for me, typically delivered good results.
