air compressor advice

All the specs I've mentioned have been at 0 PSI. It seems the "degradation" at higher PSI is roughly proportional (unit A is 30% higher than unit B at 0 PSI, and is still ~30% higher at X PSI).

For permanently mounted, ARB's CKMA12 for $275USD shipped on Amazon seems like a value winner to me, but that's assuming the specs they list on their site are accurate (their Amazon listings all show different - lower - specs for the same units).

For portable, I'd go w/ the Viair 400P. Will almost certainly pick this one up soon.

 

I would never mount an air compressor in the engine bay. The air in the engine bay is heated and the compressor will intake hot air. This will heat the compressor and give you inaccurate pressure readings when filling. Bad idea

 

lol, it wont matter, the air coming out of any of these is already hotter then the ambient air temp inside the engine bay. dont believe me? go grab the hose coming out of the head of the air compressor.

the only bad thing could be a shorter life of the air comp due to the hotter temps for its whole life. however, i can say i have had arb pumps mounted under the hood for 10+ years with never an issue on any of them.

 

I saw someone mount a portable compressor in the larger (driver's side) bed cubby. That's what I would do, too. From there you'd pull out the hose to the tires.

 

I was thinking of mounting under the bed if I ever mount something. I just have an 88p that I keep behind the rear seat. Plugging it onto the battery and taking it in and out isn't that bad. I only air down once a month, tops, usually

+1 to the comments above: if you're not adding lockers, keep it portable.

I love my Viair and for sure won't mount it. I've pulled it out to help other people's rigs, bikes, etc. Then it stows right back under the rear seat.

 

I have the 300p. Love it. I got it from the Amazon warehouse deals for $111 with free shipping. Always check amazon warehouse for shit. I got my 5160's for $100 each too. pretty amazing stuff. all stuff from warehouse is free shipping.

 

As soon as I get all the parts together I am putting a 2nd Optima, VIAIR and dual charging setup in my cross bed tool box with mounted switches and air outlets in the box.

no need to revise, you obviously have never actually used any of these. you seem like a arm chair wheeler. which is fine. but having used these, after 1min or so, the head of my air compressor is already over 140deg F. weather its outside or under the hood. your discharge air temp isnt going to be noticeably hotter. now if you want to add aftercooler go for it.

Also putting it under the truck is even a worse idea unless its protected from all elements (say in a box) but then thats even worse then under the hood.

i feel you should just keep a nitrogen tank with you so you dont have all these issues you seem to have with air expansion due to heat lol

VIAIR 450p for about a year now and love it, all parts are surprisingly high quality. The quick connect hose is ridiculously long and flexible so I haven't needed to move the unit while in use, even reaches my trailer tires. Auto shutoff once it's primed, it's surprisingly quiet and the gauge is accurate. While not as fast as the 400p (1.8cfm vs 2.3cfm @ 0psi) its duty cycle is what sold me, 100% vs 33% @ 100psi so there are no worries about on/off cycles. I tow an offroad trailer and getting six 33" tires from 15psi to 35psi takes about 25 minutes of continuous running.

 

Wrong law.. you want to use the combined gas law which combines Charles's Law, Boyle's Law and Gay-Luccas's Law.


Newtons law doesn't take into consideration a constant volume which drives pressure based off of temperature change. Yes pressure is proportional to temperature but its not as significant difference under pressure. You are literally talking about a 3 psi which can been seen on cold days to driving temp. So basically put 1.5 psi more air if you are pumping from under the hood if you are going from 15 psi to 30 psi to set cold tire pressure.

I don't know about you but I can barely read most of the gauges with in 1 psi.

If you could do the install yourself and squeeze the budget up to $300, you can get a full OBA system...
A bit more work, but i'll power a train horn in case the drivers in your area have the same kind of cranial-rectal inversion as the ones where I live...

Nice setup. What would you say your total cost/install time was? Happen to take any pictures documenting your install?

 

It might? Never tried TBH. Whenever I go OR I pack a container that has a tool bag with various tools I may need and I just throw the 300p in that container since it came in a handy little bag . Also, just an FYI, the hose on the 300p also allows you to deflate your tires... I already had a ARB deflater though....
