My 17 Taco gas mileage sucks!

    I'm new to this list and I'm just starting to post. Something that surprises me relative to this thread is that we're really not comparing apples to apples where mpg's are concerned. We all have different wheel/tire packages, lifts on some, different options, different engine/tranny configs, driving habits..... I know that my stock 2017 SR5 Access cab 4x4 V6 6sp auto will get different mpg than say a TRDOR with bigger more aggressive tires or a lift or weight adding options even though the window sticker says we'll get the same mileage. Our driving habits and where we live are different too. I have 290k on my old Toy 4x4 so I've baselined different scenarios over the years. Just changing tires to another brand of the same size has dropped my mpgs by 2 or more. I hope nobody is buying a truck for mpgs. I'm getting what Toyota said I should get so I don't think they're lying. Driving habits ,use, terrain, and wheel/tire packages effect mpgs more than we think. Just enjoy your truck and if not get rid of it and get something else. I plan on trying to get the 290k miles that I put on my old '89 4x4 and going from that wonderful truck to my new one is like night and day in every respect.

    I never got over 18mpg in stock form, and that happened once.

    My truck gets great mpg at 40-45 mph flat to moderate terrain.

    My 1998 dodge 2500 24v Cummings 3/4 ton got better highway mileage

    So far, my best mpg is 17.8.

    Average is 16.5-ish. Round trip from NorCal to SoCal this past weekend yielded 16.1.

    Duratrac 265 70 17 load E
    Rock Sliders
    No lift

    I think that's decent lol

    I think the stock 245/75-16 tires on mine make a big difference. Not very aggressive tread. The larger tires I put on my old Toy 4x4 make a very noticeable difference in power and economy and I didn't go big. I'm talking from a 235 to a 245 but more aggressive tread. I lost a bunch in power and mpg.

    SR5 is the has the same dimensions as both the sport and OR versions. What is this "aerodynamic ride height"?

    What I'm seeing is a great difference in the tire/wheel packages between my SR5 and my friends TRDOR. The same engine/tranny has to turn the bigger heavier more aggressive tire package of the TRD hence lower mpgs. Just my observation. I'm also seeing the difference in my 2017 tranny and the 2016's that need updating. My tranny is flawless. I love it.

    Could the problem be you're cruising at over 3500 rpms? My truck sits at around a comfy 2k aroind 75.

    Guarantee if you go back to stock tires you'll get better mpgs. I've had coopers they're sticky, great for off-road but if you mostly do highway they're terrible.

    Measure an SR5 tire from bottom to top... 29.5"

    Measure a TRD off-road tire... 30.6"

    Since they have the same wheel size and otherwise same suspension height (different shocks/springs obviously) the extra height on the tires will also lift the entire truck. It's not a BIG difference, but it's a difference nonetheless. Combine that with a wider tire (more friction), more rolling resistance, more rolling weight, no front air dam (less aerodynamic) and all that combined means you get less MPG. Window sticker will say the same but as anyone that has added bigger tires on their truck knows... it hurts mpg.

    There is a big drop after 70mph. After 75 I usually don't even get out of 4th gear so that doesn't help. I seem to average ~16-17 on the highway, 15ish in the city. Sliders and 265/75 E tires are the only non-stock items

    275/65/18 KO2 Front Leveling Kit
    Average 16.6 mpg (manual calculation) with 275/65/18 KO2's. Mostly city driving.

    I dont think youre in 6th. it says s6 but its not in 6th. I run around 2k ish 75mph maybe 2000-2500 at 80

    Won't. On CC it will kick back down. Have to constantly tap accelerator to try and coax it back to 6th

    I get around 17.5 MPG overall mixed driving around town.

    Like most have said, anything over about 65 sucks the wind out of the old girl. Running at 80 mph (as someone else said, life is too short to drive slow in Texas) it goes down to 15.5 MPG.

    SR5 2WD Running 275 65 R17 BFG KO2's... BRO!

    Edit: running at 75 in the Texas Hill Country on CC, the transmission will drop to 5th or sometimes 4th and stay there depending on the incline and the wind.

    I kept my stock rims and tires to swap back and forth if needed, knowing they would be a good long distance travel set.

    Unfortunately there was an unexpected death in my family and I literally threw my shit together and hit the road.

    In Iowa, flat as pancake, 70 mph.
    Pretty far off I'd say. Tires don't cause that much degradation.

    My 3rd gen averages 20 mpg per tank with a daily 40 mile round trip commute at 55-65 mph rarely using cruise control or ECT. Truck has 10k mile on it, roofrack, sliders, toolbox with about 100 lbs of gear and 265/70/17 Nittos aired up to 36 psi. Anytime I'm doing over 70 the mpg drops like a stone, traffic flow usually keeps me at speeds lower than that.

    It gets much better mileage than my 1st gen doing the same commute at the same speeds.
