Did you really trade or just saying? I'm curious if you ever really found out an answer for the problem. Someone was saying possible wheel bearing. I had one go out in another car of mine. If you still have it you can jack that wheel up and see if you can wobble the whole wheel side to side or top to bottom. If it wobbles, possible bad bearing.

What was the issue? I have the same symptoms. '08, TRD, manual 6spd w/110k. 35mph and up I have a metallic clicking that sounds just like a rock or nail in the front left tire. When turning left it's silent. When turning right it's louder. Driving straight it's audible but not always there. Braking and throttling make no difference. The sound's synced up with the tire rotation. I checked the rotar shield, shook every last part I could find for something loose... nothing.

That's what I was originally thinking. I jacked it up and they seem fine. No grumbling, crunching, play or normal bad bearing sounds. I lubed up the U joints on the drive shaft for good measure. Nothing.

Here's a vid of the sound I pulled off an FJ forum. It sounds just like a stone or nail in the tire. But, it's not.

Update. Clicking is still there. I figured why not toss it into 4WD and see if that changed anything. Well since moving to CA I rarely put it in 4. It wouldn't go in. I heard the actuator click but not engage. I got the blinking 4WD Lo light despite not trying to get into Lo. I flipped the switch back and forth will starting and killing the engine. I eventually got it into 4WD. Then I got it stuck in 4WD, then, because once in a hole why not keep digging, I got it stuck in 4WD Lo. After toggling the switch and turning the engine on and off in a mild panic I got it out. I repeated this many times until the system was freed up and it shifted smoothly. Phew. Best to shift it into 4WD every few weeks to keep everything moving is the lesson.

However the clicking is still there and it appears unrelated to the 4WD issue.

Hmm, do you have a front diff vibration at all. I wonder if its being caused by the play in the driver side CV where it connects to the differential. That may explain the change in sound when turning left/right.

I had the same problem, constant ticking like a rock in the tire. I changes brake pads, rotors and the retainer clips (it was time ) and immediately noticed the sound was gone. You should be able to purchase new retaining clips from a parts store. I'd start there as that's cheap and easy to do.

I can't say I figured out what the click was but I got it to go away. The only 2 things I actually did that would change anything were; lube the U joints on the drive shaft and shift the truck between 2wd and 4wd multiple times as it was stuck in 2wd. I did both these things and about 45min into a drive I noticed the sound was gone. The click had been around and getting worse for about 2 weeks. I've put on a few hundred miles and the click has not returned. The true cause is unknown and I'll report back if it returns.

What makes me think it is a wheel bearing is the fact it stops when you turn one way and gets worse when you turn the other. I had the same issue in my G37 and it was a bad wheel bearing. Changed them both (front) and that fixed it.

Update- The clicking was gone for a long time. 2 days ago it reappeared. Today I got an oil change and tire rotation. I marked the suspect (front right tire/wheel). Sure enough as the tire moved to the back left so did the click. Also, now it is only clicking when turning left rather than right like before. So the click moved sides and switched directions when turning. I pulled the wheel weights and the one in the photo was a tad loose and was polished from moving around. I think I finally found the culprit! If I don't report back, the wheel weight was the cause. I hammered it to make it tighter and reinstalled.IMG_3926.jpg
