Ok so I was taking my dash trim pieces off my truck and noticed an extra little plugin on the left side behind the dash. There is nothing for it to plug in to so I was wondering what it was for? Its white and has a 2 prong plug in. It is taped with the bunch of plugs that go to the ect power plug and the dash light dimmer switch and the rear diff lock button. Any ideas what it is?

Ok heres a pic. Its the little white plug on the left. The other plugs are for the dimmer and diff lock, and the plug for the ect power is not in the pic on the left. Did it come unplugged from something that I didnt notice when pulling everything out or is it for an add-on you can do. I only remember unplugging the 3 plugs and I've looked for a place that it might plug in to but cant find anything. Any help would be great before I put it all back together and find out I need it for something.

Toyota typically installs as full a wiring harness as applies to the most versions of a given vehicle. This means that the factory harness might include empty plugs for connections you don't have (e.g., optional equipment not installed on your Taco).

In other words - such 'dead end' connections are to be found in most all pre-2005 Tacomas.

I too have seen this plug and wondered what it was. I'd love to know specifically what its for.

My power mirror switch is in the door. Is the sunroof switch located in the roof or dash? Could it a switch for fog lamps?

Thanks for the info guys. Ya I was thinking a possible fog lamp or trailer brake control too. Ok good to know Im not missing something. I just had a few parts of my dash, door trim and my console dipped in camo so I am in the process of putting it back together. I'll post some pics when I get it put back together.

There was never any such thing as a powered factory sunroof or provision for fog lamps in the 2001 - 2004 Tacomas, so it's not either of those ...

I remembered a sunroof option on later years but couldn't remember if it was powered on the double cabs or not. 1 outta 2 ain't bad! They might have shared the wiring harness on the 4Runners and that might be the switch for the back window...(thinking out loud)

The factory 'sunroof' was actually a manually pop-up moonroof, offered from circa 1995 to circa 2002 or 2003.

However, dealers may have added or offered aftermarket power sunroofs at the point of sale. In any case, the factory harness didn't include any wiring for a sunroof or foglight option.

Tacomas and 4Runners of that period didn't share harnesses. 4Runners were assembled in Japan and Tacomas in the USA. The harnesses were supposedly sourced from two entirely different suppliers.

Didn't know if you had power mirrors or not. Fog lamps are probably my next guess.
