Forgot to put oil in

I had a similar experience when I took my truck in with a CEL and they told me the MAF sensor needed to be replaced for something like $400. I asked them if they could try cleaning it first and seeing if that did the trick, as that would cost maybe $10 in parts and 20 min of labor. The guy laughed and said we don't do that, we just replace parts with new ones.


Fortunately it was covered under my 3rd party warranty so I let them have at it

The service manager said that he would personally check the 9000 mile engine before installing it. His quote, "I don't want to put a bad engine in and have you come back in 30,000 miles with a problem." I felt like that made sense, the dealership has been up front and responsive.
To be fair, the first person I spoke with that said they didn't see any damage wasn't the service manager.
After much consultation on this forum, I decided I would get the motor replaced or trade it in on another. I am happy with this result. If the truck runs like shit or I have problems I will take it back and trade it in.
As far as the long block not being sold by Toyota, I am not sure. The service manager said that they could get a short block but would have to install/machine the heads etc. I'm not a mechanic so not sure about this.

Jared, you are a good man and a better man than me in this circumstance. I lost it when my wife's 1 week old Honda Pilot was backed into by another dealership worker and dented the hatch.

Were it me, I would also document every single thing/event/statement/milestone/engine block numbers/etc. in perpetuity with this truck and ensure the dealership is aware of same. Additionally, (CAUTION: you may find this excessive but stay with me..) I would "retain" an attorney local to your community and explain to him/her what has occurred and mention you would like something in writing on letterhead to the dealership and Toyota, certified mail. Probably something along the lines of "depreciation", "numbers not matching", CARFAX explanation, etc. And yes, I did the above even with this damage to my wife's Pilot (great kid/commuter vehicle by the way). Dealership went far above and beyond when I showed them the note and this dealership is not known for friendly customer service. YMMV.

This does two things: formally alerts the dealership you are serious and they will be less likely to fuck with you now and in the near future. Additionally, it also gets this whole event memorialized in case you have do have to go to court down the line in the near or far future.

All used motors from reputable recyclers come with a replacement warranty. They are not going to risk selling a questionable motor. They will just have to supply another. Nobody wins if a shitty motor is sold to a dealer.

If that motor runs trouble free for a a year, then its unlikely there is anything wrong with it. Give the pro junkyards some credit.

 

I wouldn't consider dealership putting a 10yr old shortblock in a new truck after fucking up the one that came in it making the individual whole again........

 

Where did you get 10 year old short block from?

They are replacing the original motor with a complete motor that has 9000 miles.

Again, no one is going to replace the 1 year old engine (OP has a 2015) with a 2006 motor.

 

Just because it has 9000 miles on it doesn't mean it hasn't been laying around for a decade, if I were the OP I would ask the Dealer to give the VIN# that the used engine is coming from so he can research it.

 

I give up.

Is the engine serial number tied in with the VIN in some way?

I am not sure if the engine number is tied to the VIN, but a reputable wrecking yard should be able to supply you with the VIN that the Engine is coming from, I would sure want to know if this were my truck.

yes, my truck is 2008 purchased in 2011 and my car is 2003 purchased in 2004 (close), brand new everything. Drove an 82 for 27 yrs before getting the new 2005 AC in 2009. Busted, you got me. Actually the wife is the one that gets new cars. Her last new one is 4 yrs old now.

It's fine if you are willing to accept the used motor to replace your current damaged one. I would want a brand new engine but that's me. The only thing I would be worried about is resale value, I am not sure if this would show up on a carfax and possibly lower what the truck is potentionally worth. It would also possibly scare a potentional new buyer if they found out the engine was replaced. So keep all documentation in case you need it to prove it was installed by Toyota technicians and warrantied.
