In PA, you take the deer, call the Game Commission within 24 hours, and they issue you a "tag", which is just a number, over the phone. Doesn't matter if you hit it or someone else did. It's hassle-free and prevents any future trouble, particularly if you're a hunter.

Edit, you can't keep the antler unless you pay for them, though.

 

How long do you have from the time the animal is killed until the meat is spoiled by not bleeding them out? Always wondered about that. Not a hunter.

 

It depends on the temperature outside, but it's not a matter of blood as much as getting it gutted and the meat cooled down. Guys hang deer, but the value of that is very subjective. The main concern in gutting a deer is getting the meat cooled.

You can safely leave a deer intact overnight, but I wouldn't let one sit in the sun all day, even in the winter.

 

Used to be similar in IN, eons ago when i lived there. Some friends had a farm off a busyish county road that saw a fair amount of deer hits. They often found cervine hit n run victims struggling on the side of the road but had to call the deputy to deliver the mercy kill bullet if it was out of season. Then they would pay some fee for a tag and get to keep the deer. As someone said, there was a lot of waste, but there was a lot of good meat too (we had a good local butcher). And no sitting in a deer stand at 5 in the morning. Ahh, nostalgia...

Ive eat some road kill just as good as a shot deer. As long as u dont run over it, at least one side should be perfect and the back straps should be fine too. If they dont smell gutty, the inner loins should be just right also. I would say u lose about as much meat at a shoulder shot anyway
