Full disclosure: I'm an oil nerd and love me a good oil thread...

It's interesting how people praise the engineers and their suggested oil change intervals in this thread, but then complain about the lack of thorough engineering on all the other 3rd gen issues in other threads. There are so many variables in play that influence OCI intervals where what's best for one person may be overkill for someone else.

Modern OCIs are driven by advancement in oil composition, precision manufacturing processes, and most importantly consumer cost of ownership statistics. OCIs significantly factor into that last part, so it's in the manufactures best interest to extend change intervals to drive down ownership costs. For the majority of people that buy their truck then flip it in 50k miles, they will never see a difference between 5k and 10k oil changes.

I plan on extracting every ounce of life out of my truck, so longevity is an important consideration for me. I'm a big advocate of changing oil only after the first 2.5-5k miles, then running 7.5k-10k intervals after if using a top tier synthetic oil. Cartridge style filters typically have a higher usable pleat surface area compared to spin on filters, so 10k on a filter really isn't stressing anything too much. During engine manufacturing and assembly, various oils and chemicals, as well as metal shavings when everything gets moving for the first time, find their way into the oil. It seems to make logical sense that getting that stuff out of circulation cannot provide any negative impact on longevity. Can I provide evidence that it help... no I can not.

I'm coming from VW and Audis where I've done tons of research on their direct injection, injector patterns, Blackstone oil testing, etc etc. The one thing I don't think people understand is the impact of direct injection on oil longevity. One of main downfalls of injecting fuel directly into the cylinders is a lack of atomization resulting in fuel washing the side of the cylinders. This fuel eventually gets pulled into the sump by the rings, which can cause fuel dilution in the oil. Fuel dilution leads to breakdown in viscosity and higher volatility, both lead to carbon buildup issues and higher wear. I haven't had time to study the DI / port injection setup on my Taco yet, but it's certainly something to be aware of when determining your OCI.

That was just a simplification. The important thing is to use the Toyota filter. You can buy it from the dealer or online.

Meh...more to consider than straight mileage when deciding oil change intervals.

I know with the old style filter, they had a superior amount of filtering media.
Don't know about the new cartridge style, though.

If someone wants to get REAL RICH...figure out a test that will tell you if your mechanic, dealer, Valvoline...etc whoever changes your oil REALLY put in SYNTHETIC? It drive me crazy..I know they cheat...The only alternative I have found it to goto Valvoline Quick Lube where you sit in the car and you can see them fill it with FULL Synthetic and pump it in.....all others you can't watch or cant tell???

If you do it yourself you know what oil was put in. And you know the quality of the work.

You know ...I thought these Taco Boards was a place you could come to share you experiences, get answers and to grip groan grump and cheer...what I am finding is that there are a lot of angry people? Some of you are just DICKS!! If I ask a question, I am not looking for a sarcastic asshole to answer...humor is good most of the time..but I challenge anyone to go through these boards...many of the answers are from Angry people!! Sad... I am a hard core Trump supporter and It sounds like most people on this site are too...but divert your anger somewhere else ..or maybe it is up to me just not to participate anymore... (ok I will leave and wait for the dickheads to response first and quickest)

    all tore up already
since your truck is recommended to run 0w20, it is synthetic oil. there is no conventional 0w20.

My salesman didn't say those other silly things. I didn't ask for maintenance advice. And he didn't earn commission from oil changes. What do you got?

Maybe he has a competent mechanic who works on his cars, yes there are still people who take pride in their work, they high set a high standard for themselves and they are busy and have return customers due to the fact that they do a good job. I have been buying tires and having most of my service done at the same place for 25yrs, I trust the owner of the shop and his nephew to do a good job. His business was started by his father and uncle and has been in the same place for 60 yrs, when he retires, I'm sure his nephew will take over under his supervision just like he did from his Dad.
