I test drove one of those diesel colorados.really nice, but it was new.didnt really drive that much better than my 09 Tacoma.and chevy is hit or miss on reliability.our police Tahoes at work are really odd.1 can be perfect, the next one a POS.

I work for a leasing company, and you can't really look at what the Toyota and Chevy residuals are. Manufacturers play games with residuals. When a manufacturer needs to sell a certain vehicle, they bump up the residual way higher than it should be, to drop the payments. Just because a manufacturer has a certain residual, that does not mean it will be worth that amount. Some manufacturers are batter than others. We use our own custom residuals, and the Tacoma holds it's value way better than the Colorado. I normally buy used, but a used 15 Tacoma was only going to save me a couple grand over a new one. I looked really hard at one of the GM twins, but I drive 35K miles a year and don't want to be forced to drive a truck longer than three years. There are a couple reasons I went with the Toyota, but the main reason was the RESALE of the Tacoma. In that respect, there is no comparison between the Tacoma and GM twins. We've traded for plenty of the GM twins to get a feel for resale.

I give Toyota the edge on reliability and getting 200K miles out of it. GM has great reliability also, but I'll trust Toyota more on that.

I do not get this argument. I had my 04 for 12 years and got 70% of what I paid for it, so yeah. To me it does.

For some like me the 6 foot bed is a must have. If I did not need the bed I would buy a car.

    Easy.

Go to Chevy's and try out a Taco.

You clearly had a unicorn. That is so far from typical I have trouble believing it to be true (but will take your word). I also have trouble believing you think that applies widely; do you honestly think someone buying a $35,000 truck today can expect to get $24,500 for it in 2028? (ignoring present-value/future-value calculations)

I have absolutely no idea what I will get for it in 12 years. That said, 10 year resale is inportant to me, which was my point.

The new twins are very different than the last model.

Truth is reliability may only be slightly better than with the Taco..... Resale will be much better though.

Resale, 4X4 ruggedness , better fitment.... why I chose the Taco. I am a Chevy guy though.

My point is that any difference will approach negligible in that timespan in most instances.

Yeah no. I don't care about Internet Arguments enough to bother. It's only because you're a Taco owner that I'm even bothering to reply. :D

Bought 2017 taco last month. Had 2003 TRD FOR 10 years so I researched all trucks for months before buying, thinking I might buy something different. I am in the auto repair biz. Don't believe the conSumer rating guides ranking the Canyon 1st. Just go see the two in person then the decision will be easy. No truck is more reliable than the taco.

Interesting. I wonder how much of that had to do with increasing prices in the new trucks? I think my truck was only $22k new, and I expect it to sell for $9-10k at 15 years old and 200k miles. There is a lot of inflation built in certainly: if we could rewind back with the same dollar figures, my truck is probably worth $5-6k in 2001. Certainly back then, who thought a Tacoma could ever retail for $41,000????

Depending on mileage, a lot of the 04 double cabs are going for 9 - 15k for the 4X4s, a little less for the Pre-runners around my area. Two private parties are listing for over 16K with mileage just over 110k miles. One used dealer has one listed for 17,900 so it's not too far of a stretch to see 70% of the value retained on some trucks.

My TRD ORLB 4X4 was only $36.8K at MSRP. There's not many $41K Tacos unless you go crazy on options

Part was due to buying used (7k miles) at a good value. Part was also due to the truck being in near mint condition with only 90k ish miles. Again, the only point I was trying to make is 10 year resale does matter to many people. Good luck OP.
