For all the 6MT owners, have you experienced any clutch shudder getting into first? As in vibrations felt in the shift knob when slipping the clutch to get into first gear.

I have a '17 with 2000 miles and I've been getting a small amount of shudder when getting into 1st since day 1. Only happens when it's slipping and it's far more noticeable when attempting to start going up a hill.

Really don't want to take it into the dealership and god forbid let them take apart my transmission but might have to if no one else is getting this.

    When you say:
Do you mean letting off the clutch just slightly to get the tranny into first?

Just got mine this week, haven't noticed anything. I do however find my self putting it in reverse frequently when going over to 1st. They could have done something about this.

Right. It only shudders once the plates are slipping and before they have fully engaged together. Once the clutch is all the way out it's smooth.

Just out of curiosity what RPM are yall at the moment you have fully released the clutch getting into 1st? For me its normally 1-1.5k RPMs.

That couldn't be more opposite than mine. It's actually surprisingly difficult to push mine from the 1st 2nd column to the reverse column. To the point that a small child probably would not be able to do it one handed.

Coming from a slew of 4 and 5 speeds it took some getting used to. but after 6 months or so I never put it in reverse on accident anymore.

No, mine is nice and smooth. Did you happen to have an incident where you could have glazed it? Like where you may have smelled it cooking?

No I haven't but it's possible the people driving it on/off the train and/or delivery truck could have.

I've been very gentle with the clutch over the first 2000 miles. Perhaps too gentle. I have read some comments on the interwebs saying a bit of shudder on a new clutch is normal and it goes away once its broken in. Perhaps mine will get better over time.

I've had mine shudder a few times. Mostly when going from 2nd to 1st. The point where the clutch disengages/engages on the pedal travel is vague but quick (hard to describe). For me it seems like the pedal travels quite a ways but only actuates for what seems like an inch of travel. For me I just need to remember to fully floor it when shifting since it seems like its not fully disengaged with the pedal about 1-2" off the floor.

I've also had some shuddering going from 1st to 2nd but I think that's due to shifting at too low of a RPM.

Also will add it has gotten better over time.

Agreed. It's hard to articulate these things over text. The engagement point on mine is also towards the top of the pedal stroke and 1-2" of travel I'd say - only a portion of the entire pedal stroke.

I actually do have this, I know exactly what you are talking about. I haven't burned my clutch at all and I got the truck with 20 miles on it.

The only way I can minimize the shudder is if i keep the RPM's at around 1500 before it starts to engage and really finesse the clutch. Otherwise I get that slight, deep shudder, especially more noticeable when the truck is warmed up. I don't know about other people's but it seems like if I go a little slower on the clutch than what I feel is normal things get a lot smoother. I've driven a couple of other manuals (both new and old) that seem to be a little more forgiving. But when its done right in this truck, everything feels smooth as butter so I'm hesitant to say something is really wrong.

And yes, my engagement point is high as well, i believe thats normal.

I wouldn't waste time taking it in, they aren't going to really be able to do anything about it. Unless yours is really bad? Mine is at 10k miles and still does it.

Yay someone else! It sounds like you are experiencing exactly what I am. I too have been able to minimize or eliminate it when I take it slower than normal and really finesse it out. And it's not bad at all if I'm being honest. I doubt a passenger would feel it, it's just something I've noticed and wondered about.

I was messing about with it today after work and found that if I give it a little more gas and wait a hair longer to fully release the clutch it's much smoother. I was probably being too gentle with it. I drove my Z today and tried to compare and contrast the two and noticed that I'm far more aggressive with the Z. Even got some shudder in the Z when I came off the clutch to fast without enough gas...I've had that happen many times before and recalled that the remedy was more gas and slower clutch release. Carried that over to the Taco and seems to be working better.

I have the clutch shudder on my truck. 2700 miles on it. Doing it since day 1 with 6 miles on the clock. It's a little smoother when I give it slightly more gas, and let the clutch out faster. Can't always do that in traffic or off road situations. No shudder when 4 lo is engaged.

Just joined as I was searching for this too. Got my truck with 14 miles about 2 weeks ago. Up to a little over 500 miles now and I can feel it in first taking off.

I'm actually dropping my truck off for the device department to look at it next week.

Mine also can be super clunky if you just don't shift it right. As I've gotten more seat time and learned the truck it's gotten better but I'm having them check that too. It's probably normal and was just from me not knowing the truck well, but they may as well look too since ittl be in there.

Clunky manuals is a characteristic of the Tacoma, has been since day 1 (first gens). Just something you gotta learn to love, I came from a manual trans Scion tC and that thing was smooth as silk. The Tacoma.....not so much lol. It is a truck after all, but the clunky shifting can get annoying especially if you're in a traffic jam and having to shift a lot.
