aFe Magnum Force Stage 2 Si Pro Dry S Air Intake - Part Number 51-81162

Not looking to start an argument over whether they are worth it or not, just trying to get some honest opinions/reviews on this intake. The main purpose of the switch will be for the sound, but the gains that aFe claims wouldn't be terrible if they happened to be true. Is the sound obnoxious? I've heard aftermarket intakes on V8's and cars in person and they sound pretty sweet, but never heard one on a 4.0 Tacoma other than YouTube videos. Any input is appreciated.

Gunna stick to answering your question here, and not going off topic yet.

The racket from that intake naturally aspirated is terrible in the cabin imho. when merging on highway or passing or going up a grade, the large plastic box causes so much resonation that inside the cabin you CANNOT talk at a normal volume and be heard, and the resonating noise makes the glove box area sound like its falling apart.

I dont have a sound clip, and sound clips arent the best because the mic on the recording device doesnt usually capture the sound right.
somehow once the supercharger was put on, the resonating went away and all i heard was the whine of the blower. the cabin is much quieter.

Thats just my opinion and experience on the topic.

I agree with this 100%. However, I have the AFE on my supercharged 4.0 and it amplifies the whine of the supercharger a bit, which I enjoy. But again, I'm not a big fan of intakes on NA motors.

I think those look cool, but I don't think I could stomach cutting a shake for something I don't even need...

So are you both saying the sound of the intake functioning properly is what causes the resonation? There's not really poor design (unless you're considering the box being too big) or fitment flaws?

And what SC are y'all running while we're at it. I'm going to put one on down the road, but from what I've seen the prices range from $2,500 to over $5,000 depending on what upgrades you get with them. Was leaning towards TRD or URD, but then there's the Magnuson that was a little cheaper than those if I'm not mistaken.

Im not sayin the intake was faulty, and i know i installed it right (its just an intake). its just annoyingly loud inside the cabin. i assume its resonation inside the plastic box i hear. i may be wrong.

ill never run it naturally aspirated again, its terrible.... subjectively

TRD supercharger is not made anymore. The Magnuson is the go to alternative because its essentially the same supercharger.

    I have the TRD.

What upgrades is dependent on you. plain stock they aint that impressive... pair with a smaller pulley, headers, ypipe, intake, and exhaust and its more fun.

Good info. I don't mind some noise. Honestly one of the main reasons I was thinking of doing it in the first place, but if it's excessive to the point that it would get annoying to drive then I may go another route.

Ok. I've got a Borla cat back already. Was thinking of y-pipes and headers, but heard that causes a lot of raspiness when it's that open which I don't think I would like. More of a smooth sound kinda guy.

Back then i sold the stupid thing and got a urd intake, then ripped that out due to water getting to the maf sensor in the rain and poor maf seat seal which caused whistling and more water to hit the maf sensor (gadget did not address as usual).

Then when i went force fed, i tried the afe again (bought same exact intake back), and the resonance was gone.

Run a small borla muffler directly after the ypipe, and then a normal size muffler further back, thats been the fix for many years now and it works.

    Or buy short tube headers.

Glad you decided to comment on this thread..I'm green to almost everything aftermarket other than sound systems. Lots of good info. I love the way my truck sounds now. I'd hate to do something further up the exhaust that would drastically change it to something I wouldn't like though. Big difference in sound once it's opened up? Cat-back made a big difference imo.
