I also have run full synthetic since the late 90's . There are the same different choices for viscosity with full synthetic as in dino oil . I would use a different synthetic in Alaska than I would use in the AZ. desert .

i remember i had a customer that was adamant synthetic oil was similar to snake oil. his cts required it. made him sign off every oil change he was using what gm did not recommend. he shit when we had to do a timing chain at 68k because the guides and everything timing related was worn to nothing. with mobil1 around 7 bucks a qt and cheap house brand oil under 3 a qt for full synthetic i think youd be silly risking your engine over less than 10 bucks every 6 months. and when your motor does do something weird, you better believe the first thing they check is maintenance history

As a Toyota service manager I saw considerably more engine failures from lack of oil or incredibly poor maintenance(i.e. going way too long between oil changes). I'd never deny a customer a warranty claim over viscosity. One, that's very hard to substantiate. 2. Odds are something else was really the root cause. Three, it would be just a dickish thing to do.
You can debate which oil might deliver a slight bump in mpg, but to attribute engine issues to using 5w over 0w is a stretch.

because in over a decade of auto business ive seen exactly 2 timing chain issues. one was a motor run dry and one was someone who did every maintenance except didnt believe in synthetic oil. i can draw conclusions that the only thing that causes premature wear on so many parts would be lack of lubrication. which sounds a lot like an oil issue. and since he was the only customer i ever met that refused to use a fluid specifically required by the manufacturer. @Aussiek2000 is a gm master tech i believe. wonder how many timing chain jobs hes seen that werent directly related to oil

On the subject of oil , I just got the results of an oil sample of oil from a motorcycle that I know was in the bike for 1500 miles and 11 YEARS . It is non synthetic Honda oil . Blackstone labs reported the "TBN" results as the oil had lots of usable additive left in the oil. I should run it for another 2000 miles and check it again.
If Blackstone is to be trusted , this is proof to debunk the oil changing of 3,6,or 12 months of time is BS .

from what i know, conventional oil is not conventional oil unless specifically noted or a non detergent oil. it is derived from crude oil. synthetic oil is derived from a blend of elements and is free from any contamination. the oil most people buy today not listed as synthetic is a blend of conventional and synthetic. you are wrong to think they both came from the earth. if you are in the NH area, come on down we can talk oil all day. ive seen and done roughly 100 UOA, done valvoline, mobil, pentosin and castrol classes on it. but i am by no means an expert on the subject. i have a tough time understanding the odd oils like hydraulic fluids etc, but think i know more than your average joe(or you for that matter) since it is a big part what i do for a living.

edit: i dont think you know the first thing about oil. you can never find what additives are used because thats proprietary information. do what you want with your truck but dont misinform the less knowledgeable people who may read this.

Older GM 3.6 engines ate timing chains like candy. The 2.4 is the same way. People who keep the oil full and changed regularly (under 5k miles) had a lot less issues than those who waited on the dash light to come on

Hence the "a lot less issues". Reading is fundamental. I never said they were trouble free

what company is that? because its clear the difference even comparing UOA if you double the miles on synthetic. an entire industry disagrees with you. i cant educate you any more than your obviously misinformed company had. id hate to know your thoughts on things like evolution and global warming

    Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I think motor oil debates on this site should be treated like religious or political posts and locked.:locked: Just like politics there are two sides and each cannot imagine how anybody could possibly disagree. Their point of view is clearly the only correct one. If only they could just make their argument :argue: a little bit stronger the other side will see how obviously correct it is. Failing that it devolves into :smack:grammar naziism, name calling and personal attacks.

(starting the count down to when someone makes this post about the 2 idiots in the news right now and really does get this thread locked 10.. 9.. 8.. 7.. ..... ..

if you think oil companies are bad consider the dealer telling people they can go 16 000km between changes.
Sure new oil can do so.
But filters haven't changed enough that they can go 16 000km.
I know a lot of mechanics all say the same thing, oil may be good for 16 000km but the filter isn't.

$40-50 every 6 months is good insurance for me. I'm not that hard off I need to wait and change my oil every 3 years. Lol

I'll probably be doing mine every 10K
Time will tell. I'll be getting an oil test done, and going to inspect the filter at 10K.

oil changes are probably double that here.
I haven't looked up the price for 0w-20 yet but cant imagine it being cheaper than any other synthetic so oil changes are probably close to 120

I've been using 5w20. Was getting cases of Kendall synthetic for $20 and then like $4 for Toyota filter
