Another motor oil debate.

I'll need to check the dealers here in Ontario. Wonder what it will cost. Hell I pay $90 an oil change for jetta and it only holds like 4L lol
Motul Pro Spec 8100 though, might be the reason its so much more.

 

I wonder how much of a difference there is between Castrol, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Motul etc when it comes to the 0w-20

I have multiple vehicles to drive. My own, family members, customers, lot cars, etc. someone always needs something worked on/driven

 

2006 Jetta TDI meets higher spec than what VW recommends and I've been running it for years no problems. lol
I'll continue to do so. Besides engine is far from stock, I've tried other oils and noticed a difference

 

MOBIL 1 on sale at Canadian tire and Walmart is like $34.95 for 4L or 4.4L

You'll pay more for royal purple and motul, but I wonder if its really any different from the others.

 

I knew a guy that told me the first thing he did with any engine was pull the thermostat out and throw it away. "These engines run too hot, it's crazy." Obviously he was smarter than the people that designed the engines and looked at tolerances while running the crap out of them on dynamometers.

The last time I saw him he was pulled off the interstate with his hood up. I was headed the other direction so he was on his own.

p.s. This is what the manual says:

"If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change."

I just changed the oil in my rig. I went with a high-end coffee filter....not some no-name Walmart crap, but a good quality Mr Coffee filter. Filled it with 5.5 qts of all natural piss. I'll admit that it took awhile to get that much out. But I did it. Thank Miller Lite.

 

Yeah, 30 years later and oil discussions still going strong.
Just change it on time, don't mix brands, and most arguments are pretty moot.

As a service manager people would try to get me to enter into these debates. Changed properly, all API certified oils are good. If you want to find out which oil you can just abuse and neglect and have it still work, well, your on your own on that one. Let me know what you find out.

Look up Mobil 1 5w-30 in Subaru EJ20 turbo motors if you want to see a shocking oil trend.

That being said, I will give my uncalled for $0.02 on the issue. I don't like how light the oil specs are on most new cars, but I'd be inclined to think that the driving force is CAFE standards rather than ultimate oil protection. That being said, your average dealer will use 0w-20 at the standard 10,000 mile interval because that's what Toyota calls for. The average consumer won't be driving the trucks hard enough to wreck the oil enough that it's dangerous (when is the last time the average consumer even CHECKED their oil, let alone thought about it).

I personally am not a fan of the extended intervals, at least not without running UOAs on my own oil with my own driving style and I will probably change at 5,000 intervals. I'm sure it's throwing away money, but it's piece of mind. Since I don't really want to get into a warranty war if someone does go south, I will run the standard dealer issue 0w-20 at least until the 5/60 is up and then decide if I want to go heavier. That being said, if I was planning on driving the truck harder, towing regularly in high heat, etc, I'd probably run German Castrol Syntec 0w-30. I ran that in my STi (a car known for being hard on oil) for 40,000 miles without a hiccup with the UOAs to prove it.
